M.S. in GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT

The M.S. in Graphic Communications Technology Management will offer our graduate students a high degree of competency in the technical and managerial aspects of the graphics industry. The essential advanced knowledge of current advances in digital imaging, digital printing, and color image processing are combined with advanced management considerations in areas such as: cost analysis, sales analysis, marketing, human resources management, management communications and the legal environment of contemporary business.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum GPA of 3.0 (lower GPA may be considered with additional experience).
Two letters of recommendation
Departmental interview
Undergraduate or professional experience in: lithography, photography, desktop publishing, color image processing, web publishing, studio art, computer assisted design, graphic design/visual communication, accounting, economics, marketing, sales, advertising and public administration.

GRADUATE COURSES IN GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS
   
Digital Image Preparation : GCOM-5610

A study of digital prepress evolution and techniques covering the copy preparation process, layout and graphic design concepts, text composition and image acquisition, imposition, film/assembly and proofing systems. Output devices, image carriers, digital file transfer systems and reproduction processes will also be explored.

Digital Print Communications Imaging : GCOM-5620

A study of the principles, practices, and problems in digital print communications. Topics include the development of technical knowledge, the understanding of current materials and equipment, and future trends in print imaging technology.

Color Analysis and Image Processing : GCOM-5630

Analysis of color theory, separation, image capturing devices capabilities, image manipulation and processing. Tone reproduction, masking requirements, color measurement/models, color proofing systems, printing and color reproduction requirements including file transfer will also be explored.

Digital Photographic Imaging: GCOM-5640

A comprehensive study of modern digital photographic imaging techniques and applications including image input devices, structure, manipulation, color representation and output devices. The use of appropriate imaging file formats, sizing, compression and digital links will be explored.

Web and Print Publishing : GCOM-5650

Analysis of web and print publishing requirements and practices, including concepts, composition, production and storage. Various techniques used for conventional and digital publishing, and copyrights will also be explored.

Sales Analysis in Graphic Communications : GCOM-5660

An in-depth study of sales analysis in the graphic communications industry focusing on sales techniques and practices of creative salesmanship, sales cost and budget, sales program evaluation, account coverage, and compensation. Sales force organization, selection, training, and sales force motivation will also be explored.

Estimating and Cost Analysis in Graphic Communications : GCOM-5670

Study of cost analysis and current cost estimating practices in the production of printed materials. Estimating procedures for paper, ink, digital imaging, desktop publishing/electronic prepress, conventional photo-mechanical prepress production, digital /conventional sheetfed offset presses, and web offset press production. The application of computers to estimating procedures, pricing for a profit margin, preparing quotations, costing systems and printing order processing will also be explored.

Management Issues in Graphic Communications : GCOM-5680

A study of the management of graphic communications business functions and structure. Topics include organizational theory and practices, printing office procedure, electronic communications tools, production and quality control, human resources, sales, marketing, purchasing, financial assessment, case study analysis, and contemporary management issues.

Research Seminar in Graphic Communications : GCOM-5690

An investigative study of trends in and applications of recent technological developments in graphic communications.

Marketing Management : MGS-5400

In-depth study of management of the marketing function. Applying the fundamental principles of management: planning, organizing, controlling, measuring and evaluating (both internally and externally) to the total marketing effort of the organization. Managerial problems of the market concept, product development, promotional strategy, physical distribution, pricing, demand analysis.

Legal Environment of Business Policy and Information Management : MIS-5506

Covers business policy in relationship to law along with ethical, political and economic considerations as they affect business organizations. Business law topics: contracts, computers and property, agency and business organization are covered. Law and business policy are related to information management and various implications for business organizations explored.

Business Policy and Administration : MGS-5010

A study of the functions and policies of business management: the effective use of resources for the attainment of goals in a competitive, social environment; corporate structures and strategies.

Human Resources in Management : MGS-5030

The focus is on management of human resources in an organization. To this end, planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the procurement, development, compensation, integration and maintenance functions of human resource management are explored. Special emphasis is placed on application of quantitative models, wherever possible, so that human resources management is integrated into information management.

Management Systems Communications : MIS-5102

Experiences in developing and presenting systems proposals, bids for contracts and other applications of written and oral communications within a Management Information Systems context using appropriate contemporary technology. Team communication via E-mail and desktop presentation techniques are stressed.
