The
Consortium for Achievement in Mathematics and Science
(CAMS) program is a collaborative effort between the Merck
Institute for Science Education, the Educational Testing
Service, Kean University, and four urban school districts in
New Jersey. Summer workshops are run that couple
experienced high school teachers and a college professor
into teaching teams that provide a combination of practical
advice and theory on units of the curriculum selected by
inexperienced high school teachers that attend.
Student
apprentices under the program are paid a stipend for for
their roles helping to run the workshop, serving as guides
around campus, helping setup classrooms, preparing
experiments etc. If you are considering a career in
teaching participation is an
excellent way to get an
idea of what it has to offer. Hours are flexible. If you are
interested call (908-737-3675) or
email
Professor Hicks for more information and visit the
CAMS Website.
Summer 2006

Osar
Igbinosum
Melissa Delatorre This summer Osar
Igbinosum
and Melissa Delatorre worked as CAMS
apprentices to help me prepare for the summer workshop. They
went through the units of the high school curriculum that I
was to help the teachers with and on which I gave short
lectures. Osar and Melissa setup and performed each
experiment and reported back to me to help me understand the
problems that arise when trying to follow the given
procedure using the given supplies. They both did a great
job, but I am sorry they won't be back next year since they
both are moving on to physical therapy school! |
