Dr. Jerry L. Jackson has 35 years of
experience as an educator which cuts across all levels. Most recently he
has joined the Educational Leadership Department at Kean University as
an Assistant Professor. His last administrative position was as
Superintendent of Schools for the Central Islip Union Free School
District in Suffolk County, New York.
He was born in Manhattan, New York and raised on Staten Island. He is a
product of the New City Public School system. Dr. Jackson earned a
B.A.degree from Wagner College in History, a Masters Degree in Special
Education from the College of Staten Island, a Professional Diploma in
Educational Administration from St. John’s University, a School Business
Administrator Certificate from Long Island University, and a doctorate
in Educational Administration from Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long
Island.
Dr. Jackson began his teaching career at his alma mater, Port Richmond
High School, on Staten Island, where he taught American and World
History. After getting his Masters in Special Education in 1978, Dr.
Jackson was hired by the Half Hollow Hills Central School District to
teach special education on the middle school level. Following this, Dr.
Jackson accepted an administrative position as an assistant principal in
the Central Islip Union Free School. He has worked in Central Islip for
more than 18 years, and in addition to serving as an assistant principal
he has been an Assistant to the Superintendent, and Assistant
Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
In 2002, Dr. Jackson was selected to serve on the New York State
Professional and Standards and Practices Board and he also served as a
Regional Representative to the Suffolk County Superintendents
Association. In June of 2003, Dr. Jackson completed a one year term as
President of the Islip Chief School Administrators Association
Dr. Jackson has been active professionally in the Long Island Black
Educators, an affiliate of the parent organization, National Alliance of
Black School Educators (NABSE). Additionally, he served on the Advisory
Board of the Long Island School Leadership Center.
For his dedication to children and the community, Dr. Jackson received
awards from the Suffolk County Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, Inc.,
the Marvin Avery Palmore Memorial Committee and the African People’s
Association and Our World Organization.
Dr. Jackson has done extensive research on diversity in public schools.
He is the author of Breaking the Hiring Barrier, which appears in the
June 2006 issue of American School Boards Journal and a collaborator on
the article Perspective on: Race, Gender and the Superintendency-- A
National Study published in Leadership on the Frontlines: Changes in
Preparation and Practice, a August 2008 publication of the National
Council of Professors of Educational Administration.
Dr. Jackson is also in the process of collaborating on a book that
examines issues impacting African American superintendents in America.
In addition, Dr. Jackson and a colleague have received approval and
funding from the Kean University Institutional Review Board (IRB) to
conduct a national study of female school superintendents.
Dr. Jackson has worked as an adjunct professor at Dowling College, The
College of Saint Rose, and The College of New Rochelle teaching graduate
courses in curriculum development, personnel administration, educational
administration and school finance.
Dr. Jackson is a life member of NABSE and the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People.
Dr. Jackson and his wife Kim, live in Sayville, NY. He has two children,
Stacy and Dana, and four grandchildren two as well as two step sons,
Matthew and Jeffrey
