Syllabus

Kean University is located in Union, New Jersey and is part of the New York City/Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey metropolitan area. This public, state University subsumes one graduate school and four major Colleges: Business; Education; Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and Natural Sciences. There are approximately 8,000 female and 4,000 male students. The vast majority of students work and commute to classes---only about ten percent live on campus. This ethnically diverse population (about fifty percent Caucasian) includes increasing numbers of adults returning to school ( the average age of Kean’s student  body is about 25 years), and a moderate proportion of students who are among the first generation of their families to attend college. Undergraduates are taught by approximately 750 adjunct and 350 full-time faculty.

Research and Technology (R & T) is a required  course, designed for sophomores who have successfully completed a freshmen-level English composition course. R & T emphasizes written and oral communication skills while students use computer software and the internet to write and present a 13-15 paged, argumentative research paper.

OVERVIEW

The course, as designed by adjunct professor Joseph A. Luzzi, Ph.D., Educational Psychologist, enables students to develop and complete argumentative research papers, based on their own interests.  During the first hour of scheduled classes the professor will lecture, provide guidelines/handouts and assign tasks.  A computer laboratory will be available for students to complete homework assignments, learn to use Microsoft-Powerpoint software, etc. Professor Luzzi has been developing and modifying this course since 1990.

COURSE GOALS

Students will: (a) actively participate in the development, completion, and oral powerpoint slideshow-presentation of a 14-15 paged, computer-assisted, argumentative research paper;  and, (b) take a mid-term test on research terms and concepts.

GRADING

The research paper/portfolio is worth 40% of a student's final grade. Students are required to use their own words, original ideas, and avoid plagiarism. The “portfolio” contains materials used in the completion of the research paper. These materials include a rationale for selection of the research topic, anecdotal evidence, outlines, a rough draft, and an annotated bibliography. Students will have ample time to complete the term research paper/portfolio. Incomplete grades are strongly discouraged.

The remaining 60% is divided between the mid-term test (20%) and overall attendance and participation (40%). This latter portion (40%) is further divided into attendance for scheduled classes (20%) and various computer-related assignments (20%).
