Biography: Assistant Professor and Chair of the Counselor Education Department at Kean University, Union, NJ and Director of the New Jersey Center for the Advancement of School Counseling funded by the NJ De[artment of Education. In 2008-2009 I served as Acting Chair and was appointed to a 3 year term as Chair following election by the Department beginning fall 2009.

I have been a member of the New Jersey counselor licensing board since 2000, currently serving a third term as Chair and a member of the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners. In 2006-2007 I was President of the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB). See Curriculum Vitae Currently I serve on the Oversight Committee and the AASCB representative for "2020: The furture of counseling"; a combined effort of AASCB and the American Counseling Association (ACA).

Credentials: I am a New Jersey Licensed Professional Counselor with specialties in Addictions and Mental Health Counseling, and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Other certifications include National Certified Counselor (NCC), Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) and, New Jersey Disaster response Crisis Counselor (NJ-DRCC).

Education includes: Ed.D. in Counseling Education and Supervision from Argosy University, Sarasota, Florida; M.S. in Agency Counseling from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; and a M.A.T. from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ. My dissertation was related to counselor licensing standards and professional identity: The relationship between counselor licensing standards & violations:A mixed methodological review.

Areas of study & research interest: Among several areas of interest, I am investigating: patterns of counselor licensing violations as they relate to training and standards; disaster and trauma issues;  and programs helping students succeed through classroom interventions such as the Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) program. Current data collection is underway with school counseling programs in New Jersey. I am co-editor with Dr. Jane Webber of the new 3rd edition of the ACA bestseller, Terrorism, trauma and tragedies: A counselor's guide to preparing and responding available this fall.

The New Jersey Center for the Advancement of School Counseling was funded by the the Systemic Reform of School Guidance & Counseling grant, a 3-year project to help reinvent how school counseling is conducted in NJ. 2009-2010 statewide trainings for pilot schools and new schools will be listed on the website which is linked in several places on this site..

Previous employment: For eighteen-years, I served as District Supervisor of Counseling & Student Services for the Clifton Public Schools, Clifton, NJ and coordinated the district’s alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention and intervention programs, student assistance, school counseling, and student services. I also served as the District’s 504 Officer and supervised the Pupil Assistance Committees (AKA Intervention & Referral Services) and district registrar services.

Prior to working in the public schools, I coordinated an outpatient drug treatment and family crisis program, was director of a statewide prevention agency, and served as consulting clinical supervisor for an outpatient drug treatment program. I was also project director of the first program for spouse abusing men in New Jersey. Additionally, I served as an adjunct professor at Kean University’s Counselor Education program since 1985, at Seton Hall University's Professional Psychology and Family Therapy Program (1997-1998), and Ramapo College (1981).

Professional service: Currently, I serve as Editor of the New Jersey Journal of Professional Counseling. Some of the offices and committees with which I have been involved include: a past president of the New Jersey Counseling Association and NJ Mental Health Counselors Association; former chair of the Passaic County Division of Addiction Services Professional Advisory and Municipal Alliance Steering Committees. I was also one of the founders of the New Jersey Council on Divorce and Family Mediation, and served as a member of the Passaic County Communities Against Tobacco Coalition and was founder and chair of the Clifton Interagency Council.

My presentations include television and public service videos, and radio shows, including: 48 hours on crack street; What every parent should know; Straight Talk; The Sally Show; Intervention & Referral Services (NJ Department of Education video).

Publications & presentations: I have conducted over 125 presentations at state and national conferences, and authored more than a dozen publications. See a comprehensive list of publications in my vitae.
