Master of Arts

in Holocaust and Genocide Studies

Inspired by Kean University's longstanding commitment to pluralism and New Jersey's educational mandate to teach public school students about the Holocaust, genocide, and prejudice, the Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies is a 36-credit interdisciplinary program the specifically studies the Holocaust and anti-Semitism and also requires an exploration of other genocides.  The core curriculum includes an examination of the History of the Jewish People, the History of Anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust in Literature and Film.

The Kean M.A. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies is the only master’s degree program of its kind available in the region because it is interdisciplinary and emphasizes contemporary genocides.  Students examine at least two genocides and can choose to focus on the Armenian Genocide, Genocide on the African Continent (Colonial), Genocide in Asia, Genocide of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, or African-American Genocide and Slavery. Philosophical and theological aspects of the Holocaust and genocide from different perspectives are included in the course of study.

Master of Arts Candidates have access to the following resources:

• The Kean University Human Rights Institute, which will provide an anchor for the Holocaust
and Genocide studies graduate program and a focus on atrocities such as those in Rwanda,
Cambodia and Darfur.

• The Holocaust Resource Center at Kean University with its library and oral history collection
of testimony of survivors and liberators. Affiliated with the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the testimonies are
published as Holocaust Testimonies in New Jersey.

Admission Requirements: In addition to the University's admissions requirements: Baccalaureate degree with a 3.0 overall GPA (lower GPA may be considered with experience); GRE (Graduate Record Exams) or MAT (Miller Analogy Test) scores; two letters of recommendation; and a personal departmental interview may be required. Application deadlines: All applications and accompanying documents must be received by May 1st for the Fall Semester and by November 1st for the Spring Semester.

A New Home for
The Kean University
Human Rights Institute
Fall, 2009

Kean University is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the entire region. Along with this unique classification comes a major responsibility. In the world today, it is particularly important that a strong emphasis is placed on mutual tolerance and respect and on understanding of each other’s ethnic backgrounds, cultural values and customs, religious beliefs, and moral obligations

• Located adjacent to the Nancy Thompson Library, the Kean University Human Rights Institute is dedicated to encouraging peace and harmony through education.

• The Institute sponsors an annual international human rights conference – in 2008, “Darfur: The First Genocide of the 21st Century”; in 2009, “Slavery in the 21st Century.”

• Functioning in collaboration with the Holocaust Resource Center, the Institute offers an undergraduate course, “The Holocaust, Genocide, and Modern Humanity.” The Institute also supports the goals of Kean’s undergraduate academic programs in Africana, Jewish, Latin American, and Women’s studies as well as Kean’s new masters degree program in Social Justice.

• The Human Rights Institute serves as an anchor for the masters degree program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, which focuses on atrocities in Armenia, Cambodia, Darfur, and elsewhere in the world.

• The Institute sponsors research, curricular studies, visiting professors, outreach efforts, and international service-learning projects. The Institute’s Gallery and Conference Center will showcase major exhibits and lectures on human rights issues.
