Counseling Services
The Kean Counseling Center is designed to assist students in all areas of psychological counseling. The center provides in-depth, individually tailored psychotherapy services and programs to address:
Mental health issues that may adversely impinge on academic performance
- Personal development related to family concerns
- Childhood trauma
- Sexual identity
- Eating disorders
- Self-esteem
- Peer and relational difficulties
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Sexual assault or rape
Anxiety and Depression are frequent concerns of our students that are addressed therapeutically through the use of psychotherapy. When indicated, medication may be suggested and a consultation with the psychiatrist can be arraigned.
Psychiatric Consultation
A part-time psychiatrist is available for consultation when further evaluation and/or medication are indicated. These services are an option for individuals who are actively involved in ongoing treatment with one of the counseling center staff.
Eligibility for Services
The services for the Kean Counseling Center are available for all members of the University community and are free of charge. Kean University staff and faculty can be seen for short-term consultation and referral.
Confidentiality
All records of the Kean Counseling Center are private and confidential. When someone comes to the center the information gathered does not become part of a permanent University record or personnel file; it does not appear on any transcript or official document of any type. No one in the University or any other individual will be given information about a student without that person’s written consent.
Making an Appointment
The Kean Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. and 8 PM on Thursdays. An appointment to see a counselor can be made either by calling (908) 737-4850 or by stopping in at our office located in Downs Hall, room 127. We request that students coming to the center for the first appointment arrive 15 minutes early. We do so to ensure that accurate and helpful information is obtained to speed the initial intake process.
The center makes every effort to schedule students within the week of their call. Urgency of need is taken into account when scheduling an appointment.
