PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program fulfills requirements for New Jersey certification a Reading Specialist and provides the skills and techniques necessary for work with pupils who have reading problems and for work with teachers in the prevention of reading disabilities. Students completing all requirements are eligible for New Jersey Certification as a Reading Specialist.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the University’s admission requirements:
- Master’s degree
- New Jersey Instructional Certificate
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- 30 credits; 24 required6 electives
- Practicum
- Research-based thesis
Required Courses– 24 credits
- CS 5410 Developmental Reading: Curriculum and Techniques 3 credits
- CS 5411 Reading in Secondary Education 3 credits
- CS 5412 Reading Disabilities 3 credits
- CS 5415 Clinical Practices in the Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Disabilities I 3 credits
- CS 5416 Clinical Practices in the Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Disabilities II 3 credits
- CS 5460 Administration and Supervision of Reading Programs 3 credits
- CS 5480 Psychological and Theoretical Foundations of Reading 3 credits
- CS 5493 Practicum in Reading 3 credits
Electives– 6 credits
Two courses selected with advisement from the following
- CS 5470 Materials and Methods of Instruction for Teachers of Young Children 3 credits
- CS 5471 Current Theory and Practice in the Teaching of Reading 3 credits
- CS 5600 Remediation in Basic Skills
