PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program fulfills requirements for New Jersey certification as teacher of reading and focuses on the skills of prevention, remediation, and reading development. The Praxis Examination is required for certification.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- In addition to the University’s admission requirements:
- New Jersey Instructional Certificates:
- A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 from all colleges attended
(lower GPA may be considered based on appropriate experience)

- Praxis Exam in Reading

CS 5480 Psychological and Theoretical Foundations of Reading 3 credits
CS 5410 Developmental Reading: Curriculum and Techniques 3 credits
CS 5411 Reading in Secondary Education 3 credits
CS 5412 Reading Disabilities 3 credits
CS 5470 Materials and Methods of Instruction for Teachers of Young Children 3 credits
CS 5481 Collaboration in the Inclusive Classroom 3 credits
CS 5493 Practicum in Reading 3 credits
CS 5600 Remediation in Basic Skills 3 credits

Two courses selected with advisement from the following
CS 5471 Current Theory and Practice in the Teaching of Reading 3 credits
