Self-Managed Application Instructions

Thank you for your interest in Kean University's graduate programs. We are pleased to enclose an application for your convenience and ask that you please read the instructions listed below prior to completing the self-managed application.

Components of the Application

Your completed application package should include the following items:

  1. Completed Application for Admission.
  2. A check or money order (non-refundable) for $60 made payable to Kean University to cover the cost of processing your application. Fee for International students is $150.
  3. The sealed and signed envelopes containing the official transcripts of the schools you have attended (see Transcripts section).
  4. The sealed envelopes containing the letters of recommendation (see Letters of Recommendation).
  5. Personal Statement

Applications cannot be considered for evaluation until all required documents have been received by the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Deadlines

Most programs require that applications and all accompanying documents be received by May 1st for the Fall semester and November 1st for the Spring semester. Exceptions include Educational Psychology, Occupational Therapy, School Psychology, Social Work and Speech-Language Pathology. Refer to the chart at the back of the application booklet for current deadlines.

International students must submit the International Student Supplement with the application.

Program Selection

Be sure to indicate what program you are applying for and the program code (Example: 26664, Counselor Education, Business and Industry Counseling) found on the Admission Charts for each College. You may apply to one program only.

Standardized Tests

Determine your preferred program and arrange to take the appropriate test, if required. Note the following codes: Graduate Record Exam (GRE), Miller Analogy Test (MAT), Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), PRAXIS. Test results must be received by this office directly from the testing agency no later than the published deadline. Please note that it generally takes six weeks from the date of the test administration for the results to be received in this office. Most programs do not require a test for those applicants holding a masters degree or higher. Refer to the charts following the application.

Transcripts

New Students: You must submit two official copies from each college or university in which you have enrolled for any period of time showing all courses, grades and degrees received, if any. For example, if you took courses at Union County College and Essex County College, and then transferred to Montclair State University where you received your Baccalaureate degree, you must submit official transcripts from all three institutions. Request that the colleges send the transcripts directly to you in their own sealed envelopes or they may send the transcripts directly to us. Be sure not to open these envelopes as this will cause the transcripts to become unofficial and will delay your application process.

Current or Former Kean Graduate Students: Transcripts need not be submitted if you attended a graduate program within the past five years.

Current or Former Kean Undergraduate Students: Kean transcripts need not be submitted. All other transcripts for coursework completed at other institutions must be submitted, including those for credits transferred to Kean and including transcripts previously submitted.

International Students

Applicants who have attended a college or university in a country other than the United States must have their transcripts evaluated by an outside accredited agency on a course-by-course basis. This evaluation must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions by the published deadline.

Under no circumstances will transcripts be returned to an applicant or forwarded to another college, university or place of business.

Foreign Education Credential Evaluation

If you have completed any part of or all of your post-high school education outside the United States, you must have your foreign educational credentials evaluated by a credential evaluation service that is a current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). The results of their evaluation must be sent to the Graduate Admissions office by the published deadline for your program. Evaluations prepared by any person, organization, or entity that is not a current member of NACES will not be accepted. There are no exceptions to this policy.

A current list of NACES members may be found at: http://www.naces.org/members.htm

Letters of Recommendation

All programs require letters of recommendation. If needed, you should make copies of the enclosed reference form, and present them to the persons writing the references. Each recommender must enclose the letter in an envelope, seal the envelope, and sign across the seal and return the envelope to you or directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Include the envelopes, unopened, in your application package. If they choose not to use the form provided, the reference must be written on official letterhead and must be signed. If you created a credentials file at a previous college, it may be submitted by your school directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Letters of recommendation should be written by persons who can comment from personal knowledge on your academic and/or professional qualifications for graduate study. Generally, references should not be written by family and friends. See individual program requirements on the charts following the application.

Departmental Interview

You will be notified if you are required to schedule a departmental interview. It is your responsibility to arrange for the interview with the graduate coordinator who will have a copy of all your records. Upon receipt of the interview results, you will be informed by letter of the admission decision by the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Financial Assistance

Some Graduate Assistantships are available to full-time students in graduate programs. To determine eligibility and obtain an application, please call the Graduate College at (908) 737-3442. Forms for Financial Aid are available from that office at (908) 737-3190.
