PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Arts in Instruction and Curriculum – Bilingual Classroom Instruction Option is a combined certification and master's degree program in elementary and bilingual education designed to allow candidates to acquire an initial teaching certification in a fast track program.  After certification is complete, candidates can continue to take additional courses to obtain the M.A. degree.

The program is designed to prepare teachers with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to teach all students.  However, the program places a special emphasis on instructing English language learners.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University's admission requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts or Sciences
  • Passing score of Praxis II Elementary Education: Content Knowledge
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or MAT (Miller Analogies Test) scores
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Departmental interview may be required

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated ability in two languages including a passing score on appropriate test of English and a second language before the end of the first semester.
  • Must meet with program coordinator by the end of the first semester
  • Comprehensive examination
  • 45 credits

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

LEVEL I – 27 credits

K-5 Certification will be earned upon completion of this level

  • EMSE 5560* Introduction to Education: Teaching Theory and Practice 6 credits
  • EMSE 5410 Developing Language and Reading Skills in a Bilingual Setting (10 days of field) 3 credits
  • EMSE 5411 Teaching Content Areas in a Bilingual Setting 3 credits
  • EMSA 5001 Integrated Mathematics and Science Methods 3 credits
  • EMSE 5404 History & Culture of the Limited English Proficient Student 3 credits
  • EMSE 5561 Seminar in Teaching 3 credits
  • EMSE 5564 Professional Internship 6 credits

* This course should be taken before all other courses unless discussed with program coordinator

LEVEL II – 9 credits
Bilingual certification will be earned upon completion of this level

  • EMSE 5403 The Bilingual Child in American Society 3 credits
  • EMSE 5420 Theory and Practice of Teaching English as a Second Language 3 credits
  • EMSE 5401 Bilingual Multicultural Education in American Schools 3 credits

LEVEL III – 9 credits
Required for completion of the Master's degree

  • EMSE 5421 Advanced Theory and Practice of Teaching English as a Second Language 3 credits
  • EMSE 5098 Advanced Seminar I: Research in Educational Practices 3 credits
  • EMSE 5099 Advanced Seminar II: Research in Educational Practices 3 credits

Total 45 credits to complete the program
