PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master of Arts in Instruction and Curriculum, Earth Science Education Option is designed to provide knowledge and skills necessary for effective teaching of Earth Science.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University's admission requirements:

  • New Jersey Instructional Certificate
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75
  • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or MAT (Miller Analogies Test) scores
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Departmental interview may be required
  • Must be teaching Earth Science
  • Undergraduate prerequisites*:
    • o ASTR 1100 Introduction to Astronomy 4 credits
    • o GEOL 1200 Introduction to Geology 4 credits
    • o METR 1300 Introduction to Meteorology 4 credits
    • o OCEN 3453 Introduction to Oceanography 4 credits

*These prerequisites may be waived by the Department of Geology and Meteorology based on years of teaching experience

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • * 34 credits
  • * Ten required credits, 18 credits of electives, 6 credit thesis or seminar
  • * Comprehensive examination

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

PREREQUISITES* 16 credits

  • ASTR 1100 Introduction to Astronomy 4 credits
  • GEOL 1200 Introduction to Geology 4 credits
  • METR 1300 Introduction to Meteorology 4 credits
  • OCEN 3453 Introduction to Oceanography 4 credits

*These prerequisites may be waived by the Department of Geology and Meteorology based on years of teaching experience.

REQUIRED COURSES 10 credits

  • * ICA 5339 Supervised Teaching and Earth Science Methodology 4
  • * ICA 5023 Education in New Jersey Critical Issues 3
  • * ICA 5032 Research Methods for Science Education 3

ELECTIVES 18 credits

* 1 course in each of the following: Astronomy, Geology, Meteorology and Oceanography

* 2 additional courses from the areas listed above

RESEARCH 6 credits

  • * ICA 5098 Advanced Seminar: Research in Educational Practices I 3
  • * ICA 5098 Advanced Seminar: Research in Educational Practices II 3
  • or
  • * ID 5800 Thesis Option 6
