The Master of Arts in Instruction and Curriculum, Mastery in Teaching Option, is designed for the individual holding a baccalaureate degree and standard teaching certification who wishes to achieve increased understanding and skills in teaching as well as a broadened view of current trends and problems. It provides a multidisciplinary orientation which allows the candidate to broadly examine the curricula and methodology of any of several content areas and to explore teacher-pupil interaction and cognitive processes. Students select either Track A (K-8 Specialists) or Track B (K-12 Specialists).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the University's admission requirements:

  • New Jersey Instructional Certificate
  • 3.0 cumulative grade point average (lower GPA’s will be considered based on overall strength of application)
  •  Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or MAT (Miller Analogies Test) scores or previous Master’s degree
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Departmental interview may be requiredd

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • 33 credits
  • Two semester advanced seminar
  • Comprehensive examination

COURSE REQUIREMENTS – TRACK A (K-5 Specialists)

REQUIRED COURSES 3 credits (select one)

  • EMSE 5612 Advanced School Curriculum 
  • EMSE 5613 Curriculum Development and Evaluation: Theory and Practice
  • EMSE 5614 Learning Instruction, Evaluation and the Curriculum

REQUIRED CORE COURSES FOR ELEMENARY TEACHERS (TRACK A) 15 credits

  •  EMSE 5320 Computers in the School Curriculum I (or appropriate level course)
  •  EMSE 5340 Theory and Practice of Teaching Social Studies
  • EMSE 5330 Theory and Practice of Teaching Science
  • EMSE 5311 Theory and Practice of Teaching Language Arts
  • EMSE 5323 Theory and Practice of Teaching Mathematics

SPECIALIZATION 9 credits

Students select an area of specialization with 9 credits taken in that area from the courses below. Additional choices in content or education may be taken with the approval of the coordinator
