Library Instruction

Purpose

The library instruction program at Kean University strives to support development of students' information literacy skills in relation to research and information seeking. Library instruction provides an introduction to research skills as well as concepts relating to the intellectual, social, and legal concerns regarding information and intellectual property. An information literate student will have the skills necessary for lifelong learning.

The underlying foundation for the library instruction program is based upon the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, 2000).

Library instruction options

Faculty members teaching courses with a research component may request one or more library instruction sessions led by a librarian. Prior to a session, the librarian consults with the faculty member about the objectives for the course's research assignment. In collaboration with the faculty member, the librarian then designs a session customized for the course's objectives.

Library instruction sessions take place in the library's computer lab in room L-157, where active learning is supported through students' hands-on practice with the library's online catalog and research databases.

Making arrangements for library instruction

Kean University faculty members are encouraged to submit library instruction requests as far in advance as possible. By requesting sessions at least two weeks in advance of a preferred date, the librarian will have time to prepare a more customized session for a particular class.

Kean University faculty members teaching Kean Ocean classes may request a library instruction / information literacy session taught by a Kean librarian. Please submit your request as far in advance as possible.
