Welcome

Welcome to the Kean University Library.  The Library's primary mission is to support the academic programs of the University.  Therefore, the Library strives to meet the information needs of Kean students, faculty and staff by providing a broad range of resources and services.  Although the Nancy Thompson Library is located on the Union campus, many resources and services are available to Kean-Ocean students through Kean's virtual library.  The Library's web page is the gateway to the virtual library.

Library Barcode

Your Library Barcode is your "key" to the services and collections provided by Kean University Library.  The Library Barcode is a 14 digit number that is placed on the back of your Kean Photo ID card.  You will get your Library Barcode along with your Kean photo ID.  Your Library Barcode will enable you to access Kean University Library's research databases, to request books from the Nancy Thompson Library, and to use other library services such as online reference assistance and interlibrary loan.

Locating Print Books

Kean Catalog

Select the Books, E-Books, Videos & More link, also located on the menu to the left, to search for books held by the Nancy Thompson Library, located on the Union campus. You may request to borrow books located in the Main Collection of the Nancy Thompson Library. You may also limit your search results to particular types of records (such as Main Collection books, Electronic Resource e-books, or U.S. Government Online Document) by selecting an option from the Limit Your Search menu. To request a book from the Thompson Library please complete the Kean-Ocean Book and Article Request Form and submit online. You will need the barcode number from your Kean University photo ID to complete the form. You will receive email notification when the book has been shipped. Your Kean ID is required for pick up at the Ocean County College Library Circulation Desk. Please return books to this desk as well.

OCCcat Online Catalog

Kean-Ocean students with a Kean Photo ID and Library Barcode may borrow books from the Circulating Shelves of the Ocean County College Library. From the Ocean County College Library's web page, select Find Books & Movies then OCCcat Online Catalog to search for books held by the Ocean County College Library.

Locating E-Books and U.S. Government Online Documents

Kean University Library is developing a collection of electronic books, or e-books. This link will take you to available e-book collections, which can be searched or browsed. After making a selection you will be prompted to enter your Library Barcode to access the collection.

Please note that records for e-books are included in both of the online catalogs listed above under the Locating Print Books heading. Kean-Ocean students have access to those titles listed in the Kean Catalog. You may also limit your Kean Catalog search results to e-books by selecting the option Electronic Resources from the Limit Your Search menu. Access to titles in the Ebook Library (EBL) collection requires your Library Barcode. Please feel free to Ask a Librarian for further clarification.

U.S. Government online documents are also available through the Kean Catalog. You may limit your search results to online documents by selecting the option U.S. Government Online Document from the Limit Your Search menu. For help searching see the Thousands of United States Government Online Documents @ Your Library brochure. These documents are freely available.

Articles & More: Databases, Full-Text, E-Journals

Select the Articles & More link, also located on the menu to the left, provides access to databases to which the Library subscribes.  Databases are listed alphabetically as well as by format and  by subject.  After selecting a database you will be prompted to enter your Library barcode.

Periodicals List: Journals, Magazines, Newspapers

Select the Periodicals List link, also located on the menu to the left, when you know the title of a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper and you want to find out if it is available online in one of the databases to which Kean University Library subscribes.  The list will link directly to titles that are available electronically. 

Additionally the list will link to Kean Catalog library holdings records for titles that are available in traditional print or microform formats. Articles from these titles may be requested using the Kean-Ocean Book and Article Request Form.  You will need your Library barcode to complete the form.  Copies of articles will be mailed to your home address and may be kept.

Locating periodicals in other libraries

Check the New Jersey Union List of Serials to determine if a periodical is available in a library in New Jersey. It is important to confirm that a library permits public access and highly recommended to verify library holdings before making a trip.

Interlibrary Loan

Books or journal articles not owned by Kean University Library may be requested from other libraries by interlibrary loan.  Patrons will be notified when books are ready to be picked up at the Ocean County College Library Circulation Desk. Books will be  due back to the Ocean County College Library Circulation Desk by the specified due date.  Photocopies of periodical articles will be mailed to the patron and may be kept. Please select the appropriate form as listed below, complete, and submit online.

Create and Organize your Bibliographies with EndNote Web

Use EndNote Web, a bibliographic citation manager, to keep track of the books and articles you locate in various research databases. You can also manually add citation information to EndNote from books and print journals articles you have on hand. 

EndNote Web will help you to organize your source information and then to create bibliographies in your required citation styles (such as APA or MLA).
