Welcome to the Kean University Library. The Library's primary mission is to support the academic programs of the University. Therefore, the Library strives to meet the information needs of Kean students, faculty and staff by providing a broad range of resources and services. Although the Nancy Thompson Library is located on the Union campus, many resources and services are available to Kean University RN-BSN/Graduate Nursing Students at the Off-Site Raritan Valley Community College Campus through Kean's virtual library. The Library's web page is the gateway to the virtual library.

Library Barcode

Your Library Barcode is your "key" to the services and collections provided by the Kean University Library. A 14-digit number that is placed on the back of your Kean Photo ID card, your Library Barcode will enable you to access Kean University Library's research databases, to check out books from the Nancy Thompson Library, and to use other library services such as online reference assistance and interlibrary loan. Get your Kean photo ID and Library Barcode at the Union campus.

Kean University RN-BSN/Graduate Nursing Students currently enrolled at the Off-Site Raritan Valley Community College Campus are able to obtain a barcode number, without coming to the Union campus to get a Kean Photo ID, by contacting Chrisler Pitts by email at cpitts@kean.edu or by phone at 908-737-4613.

This assigned barcode will enable you to access Kean University Library's research databases, use online reference assistance, and request journal articles by interlibrary loan. If at some point you visit the Nancy Thompson Library located on the Union campus and want to check out books or request books by interlibrary loan you will need to have a Kean Photo ID card with an attached Library Barcode. Please contact Chrisler Pitts by email at cpitts@kean.edu or by phone at 908-737-4613 to set up a time to bring your valid Kean Photo ID to the Nancy Thompson Library to get your previously assigned physical barcode.

Locating E-Books

Kean University Library is developing a collection of electronic books, or e-books. This link will take you to available e-book collections which can be searched or browsed. After making a selection you will be prompted to enter your Library barcode to access the collection.

Please note that records for e-books are included in the Kean Catalog. You may limit your search results to e-books by selecting the option Electronic Resources from the Limit Your Search menu. Access to titles in the Ebook Library collection requires your library barcode. Please feel free to Ask a Librarian for assistance.

Locating U.S. Government Online Documents

U.S. Government online documents are available through the Kean Catalog. You may limit your search results to online documents by selecting the option U.S. Government Online Document from the Limit Your Search menu. For help searching see the brochure, Thousands of United States Government Online Documents @ Your Library. These documents are freely available.

Articles & More: Databases, Full-Text, E-Journals

The Articles & More link, also located on the menu to the left, provides access to databases to which the Library subscribes. Databases are listed alphabetically as well as by format and by subject. The link Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health lists databases in these subject areas. After selecting a database you will be prompted to enter your Library barcode.

Periodicals List: Journals, Magazines, Newspapers

Select the Periodicals List link, also located on the menu to the left, when you know the title of a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper and you want to find out if it is available online in one of the databases to which Kean University Library subscribes. The list will link directly to titles that are available electronically. You will be prompted to enter your Library Barcode.

Additionally the list will link to Kean Catalog library holdings records for titles that are available in traditional print or microform formats in the Nancy Thompson Library on the Union campus.

Interlibrary Loan

Articles from periodicals not owned by the Library, as well as articles in traditional print or microform formats located in the Nancy Thompson Library on the Union campus, may be requested by Kean University RN-BSN/Graduate Nursing Students at the Off-Site Raritan Valley Community College Campus by using the appropriate Interlibrary Loan form. You will need your Library barcode to complete the form. Copies of articles will be mailed to your home address and may be kept.

Locating periodicals in other libraries

Check the New Jersey Union List of Serials to determine if a periodical is available in a library in New Jersey. It is important to confirm that a library permits public access and highly recommended to verify library holdings before making a trip.

The VALE Faculty & Graduate Student Reciprocal Borrowing Program

The VALE Reciprocal Borrowing program is a cooperative onsite borrowing agreement among participating VALE member colleges and universities. Faculty and graduate students from participating institutions who are in good standing at their home library qualify for onsite borrowing privileges at the other participating VALE libraries. Faculty & graduate students must obtain a signed "VALE Reciprocal Borrowing Application Form," available at the Kean University Library before they can borrow at one of the participating libraries. Create and Organize your Bibliographies with EndNote Web

Use EndNote Web, a bibliographic citation manager, to keep track of the books and articles you locate in various research databases. You can also manually add citation information to EndNote from books and print journals articles you have on hand. 

EndNote Web will help you to organize your source information and then to create bibliographies in your required citation styles (such as APA or MLA).
