Biography

Louis J. Stewart was born in Charleston, South Carolina and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Central High School where he starred in track and cross-country. He matriculated at Franklin and Marshall College in September 1969. He continued to compete in cross country while majoring in history. Louis was also active in the African American Student Society. He earned his bachelor of art degree from the College in 1973. Louis continued his education at the University of Chicago where he earned his masters in business administration degree with a dual concentration in accounting and finance. Since his graduation from the University of Chicago in June 1975 Louis has worked as a financial analyst at the United Way of Chicago, the controller of Chicago Child Care Society, and the chief financial officer of the Englewood Community Health Organization over the next seventeen years. He earned his CPA during this time. After a successful career as a financial manager in Chicago’s health care and not-for-profit sector, Louis prepared himself for a second career in higher education by earning a doctorate in business administration with an accounting major from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Upon the completion of his doctoral education in Madison Wisconsin, Professor Stewart joined the faculty of the School of Business & Industry at Florida A&M University where he has taught undergraduate and graduate accounting courses for four years. In May 2000, he joined the healthcare management and finance faculty of the Robert Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. Professor Stewart taught financial management for healthcare and nonprofit organizations to NYU’s MPA students. In September 2003, Professor Stewart joined the Accounting and Business Law Department at School of Business, Public Administration, and Information Sciences at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus.

In September 2005, he assumed his current position of Associate Professor of Accounting at Kean University where he currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting. Dr. Stewart has written articles of both scholarly and professional interest that have been published in the Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance, Healthcare Financial Management, Research in Healthcare Financial Management, the Journal of Health Care Finance, and the Journal of Healthcare Management. He is also the contributing editor for the Healthcare Controllers’ Desk Manual. Louis continues to run, albeit at a much more pedestrian pace than that of his youth, and work out regularly. He is also an active member of the community at large. Among other activities, Louis is an active member of Evangel Church of Scotch Plains New Jersey, Franklin and Marshall College’s Alumni Board, and the National Association of Black Accountants. He lives in Plainfield New Jersey with his wife and is a proud father to three beautiful daughters; Patrice, Sarah, and Jessica, and a wonderful son; Louis Jr.
