Conformity, Innovation, and Diversity



The Niger River at Segou reveals an almost endless expanse at the beginning of the Delta and is one of the most beautiful places along the river (Fig. 1). The city itself held an important role as a pre-colonial kingdom of the Bamana people. Bamana kingdoms extended over much of what is now southern Mali. French colonial officials made Segou one of their capitals and built many structures in a neo-Sudanic style along its wide boulevards.
