Music is one of the most active and visible departments at Kean University, where performance is our focus. Without losing our concentration and excellence in the field of Music Education, our Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Music Education students are encouraged to follow in their teachers' footsteps and cultivate high skills as performers.

Many of their teachers are members of our Concert Artist Faculty who boast national and international recognition as performers. The Concert Artists present a 15-concert chamber-music series at Kean annually. These musicians are not only outstanding performers but also excellent teachers dedicated to their students.

Kean has recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. In recognition of this and of our new emphasis on performance, the University will open a state-of-the-art, European quality chamber music recital hall in January 2009. The hall, located on the East Campus just minutes from the Main Campus, is promised to have the finest acoustics in New Jersey. It will feature first class facilities for performers and audience alike.

In further support of Kean's focus on music performance, the department is developing a professional music degree—a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in Pedagogy—and two Master of Music degrees.

Since the creation of Kean's School of Visual and Performing Arts, two years ago, the Music Department has become an artistic force not only on campus but statewide; it continues to be significant in the training of the next generation of musicians and music educators.
