1. How many credits are required to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree?
The BSN degree program at Kean is a 125-credit program.
 

2. Will my non-nursing college courses transfer ?
Applicants with an AS degree: The State recognizes full faith in transfer credit and all courses taken at the associate degree level will be transferred. The typical student with an AS degree generally transfers approximately 67 credits.

Applicants with an AAS degree: Most courses will transfer, but are considered individually and must fall within the categories outlined in the Program Description. The typical student with an AAS degree transfers approximately 62 credits.

Kean University has articulation agreements with all Associate Degree Programs in NJ. The articulation agreements are available in your school’s Registrar’s office or you may call the Department of Nursing at Kean for specific information (908-737-3390).

 

 

3. Will my nursing credit transfer in from my associate or diploma program?
You will be awarded 30 transfer credits for your lower division nursing (28 Credits toward Nursing, plus 2 Credits toward the health education requirement).

 

 

4. I was educated internationally. Do I need my transcripts reviewed?

5. What if I do not have all the prerequisite requirements?
Courses in the liberal arts can be challenged by taking a College Level Entrance Examination (CLEP). Upon successful achievement on the CLEP exam credit is granted for the specific course. (Further details are described in
Prerequisites.)

Science courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Chemistry can be challenged. (Further details are described in Prerequisites.)

A student may be admitted with the condition that the student to complete the admission requirements before taking the first clinical course.

 

 

6. Can I attend part time or full time?
Both full-time and part-time options are available.

 

7. How long does it take to complete the nursing program?
Completion depends on the number of credits you have to complete and the number of credits you want to take each semester.Most nursing students attend part-time and complete the program in 3-4 years. Full time students generally complete the program in 2 years (Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring). A full-time, accelerated, 15 month track is available (Spring-Summer-Fall, Spring).

 

 

8. What if I need to “stop out” for a semester or two?

Students may “Stop Out:

   ·    For 1 semester and attend the next semester if you register for the 2nd semester       during the pre-registration period. (A semester includes fall or spring)

   ·    If you stop out for more than 2 consecutive semesters, you must reapply to the University as outlined in the admissions section.

9. Must I take all courses at Kean?
While we certainly encourage you to come to Kean for your coursework, some may find it helpful to complete their General Education Requirements at the County College. Courses in the major are taken at Kean. If a student has had the same course in another institution they should discuss this with the departmental chairperson.

Students must take a minimum of 45 credits at Kean University to be eligible for honors status at the time of graduation. For anticipated honors (gold tassel and listing in the Commencement Book) this must be in place by the end of the first semester of the senior year.

10. When are the nursing courses offered?
Nursing courses are offered in both the daytime and evening time. Approximately 90% of students attend in the evening. Evening sections of nursing courses are offered at either 5 PM or 7:50 PM to accommodate the various needs of the students.

The core courses in Nursing (NURS 3000, NURS 3010, NURS 3020) are offered both fall and spring. The other Nursing courses are offered only in one semester, either Fall or Spring as listed in the Kean University catalogue.

NURS 3010 and NURS 3020 may be offered during the summer sessions. General education and support course requirements are available in the summer. Your faculty advisor will work with you to individualize a schedule.

 

 

11. What are the clinical requirements?
There are three 5-credit clinical Nursing courses (NURS 3200, NURS 4300, and NURS 4400) and two 2-credit clinical courses (NURS 3010 and NURS 4900).  Five - credit courses include 2 hours and 40 minutes of lecture plus 5-1/3 hours of clinical per week.  As a practice discipline, clinical experiences build broader professional Nursing skills. Clinical practice at Kean is non-traditional and includes experiences such as head- to-toe physical assessment, co-leading of support groups for the chronically ill, examining quality of care through quality improvement assessment projects using evidence to answer clinical questions, and health teaching and leadership experiences. Some clinical assignments are done within one’s own work area. The dress code requirements for clinical include a lab coat and name tag.

To enroll in clinical courses students must have a current New Jersey license, documentation of a current history and physical (within 1 year) and present evidence of individual malpractice insurance, and criminal background check.

12. Who is my academic advisor?
All students are assigned a Nursing faculty member who will serve as their advisor for the time they are enrolled at Kean.  Consultation with the faculty advisor is required prior to registration for the major Fall and Spring terms.  Advisement is best planned in advance and is not limited to the registration period.  Selection of courses is based on a preset progression and students may individualize their program plan, in consultation with the faculty advisor.

14. Does Kean have National Nursing Honor Society?
Yes. Lambda Iota is the Kean chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.

Students eligible for this have completed the first 2 clinical Nursing courses, hold at least a 3.0 average and are in the top 1/3 of the class.  Eligible students are invited for induction by the Lambda Iota Eligibility Committee.

 

 

15. Does Kean have distance learning?
Many nursing courses have an online component so that approximately 1/3 of the semester is spent online. It is expected that this will become more available.

 

16. I am an RN with a Bachelor’s degree in another discipline and want a BSN. What are the requirements?
You will be admitted as a “second degree” undergraduate student. You must have completed the prerequisites (sciences, psychology and sociology), taken 15 credits of support courses and 28 credits of nursing.  Please see “Admissions” information.

 17. Is there a graduate program at Kean?
