Mammals |
The familiar squirrels and deer were only two of the 11 species of mammals identified by Kristi MacDonald-Byers, Conservation and Policy Associate with the New York/New Jersey Baykeeper. She set up "scent stations" - circles of sand and tuna-scented cotton balls - at five locations in Lenape. Animals come to investigate, and in the process, they leave their tracks in their vicinity. One visitor detected by this method was a coyote, who ventured surprisingly close to Bio-Blitz Central! Red fox and woodchuck were both identified by their burrows; deer were identified by their scat (droppings).
