PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP

 

 

Objectives:  to observe and analyze actual classroom instruction using NJCCS and NJPTS*, to assess personal aptitude for teaching, to gain an overview of education as a profession

 

Objectives:  to prepare lesson plans aligned with NJCCCS and NJPTS*, to assume limited teaching responsibilities in classroom setting, to assess readiness for professional internship

 

Objectives:  to integrate educational theory into classroom practice, to develop self-evaluation and reflection skills, to assess readiness for classroom teaching responsibilities

Field Application:  arranged by course instructor

Field Application:  due to TPC on Feb. 1 for following Fall and Summer semesters & Apr. 15 for following Spring semester

Duration:  6 days,  3 days urban setting/3 days suburban setting

Duration:  one or two semesters for a total of 15 days; requirements vary by department.  Early Childhood majors are required to perform in two (2) placements.

Duration:  full day every day, full week, full semester

Requirement:  observation and analysis; reflective journal; and beginning of professional portfolio

Requirement:  interactive planning and participation in small group/ whole class instruction; reflective journal, lesson plans aligned with NJCCCS and NJPTS*, and additions to professional portfolio are required  Register, take and pass Praxis Test for area of certification BEFORE performing professional internship**.

 

Requirement:  actual classroom teaching under the supervision of cooperating teacher and supervisor; reflective journal, daily written lesson plans aligned with NJCCCS & NJPTS*, a video tape presentation, and completion of professional portfolio.  Students MUST take and pass the respective Praxis Test for their program PRIOR to performing the Professional Internship.

Prerequisites:  2.75 GPA; ENG 1030; COMM 1402; negative Mantoux Test

**Kean University teacher candidates have a 98% pass rate in the Praxis II examinations required for teacher certification.
