Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a relatively new form of violence.  It is the sending or posting of harmful, threatening, or cruel text or images using the Internet or other digital communication devices (cyberbullying.org).  It is emerging as one of the more challenging issues facing educators and parents as young people embrace the Internet and other mobile communication technologies.

Internet Super Heroes uses 5 age-specific superheroes (e.g., X-Men, Spider Man, etc.) to educate young children about Internet safety and cyberbullying.  Other resources for educators stress online safety in school (http://www.internetsuperheroes.org/educators/index.html).

Wired Safety informs parents, educators, law enforcement officers, and youth about Internet safety such as cyberbullying, cyberstalking and online sexual predators.  It maintains an anonymous cyberbullying report center (www.wiredsafety.org).

Wired Kids is designed for children and teens and also has resources for librarians, professionals in the forefront of the information age because they design and supervise access from school computers (http://www.wiredkids.org/educators/librarians/index.html).

Wired Patrol is a resource for cyberstalking/harassment self-help strategies and encourages reporting incidents (www.wiredpatrol.org).

Cyberbullying mobilizes educators, parents, and students to combat online social cruelty.  It offers information and resources to educators and parents.  A teen site is “under construction”.  Educator resources include a needs assessment survey, Educator’s Guide to Cyberbullying, and workshops/online courses (http://www.cyberbully.org/).
