Dr. Dawood Farahi, President of Kean University, has charged the University Planning Council (UPC) with the planning and development for the University’s direction. Other UPC responsibilities include coordinating and periodically updating the University’s strategic plan and recommending enhancement projects including funding through Quality First Initiatives (QFI) funds.

The UPC membership is representative of the entire university community. The UPC membership guidelines are as follows:

  • Eight members are appointed by the President to include representation of offices reporting directly to the President. These appointments also represent new directions of the university such as Kean-Ocean, Liberty Hall, and the Human Rights Institute. Presidential appointments include the UPC chairperson and vice-chair
  • Six members are appointed by the Faculty Senate chairperson to serve as representatives from each of the six colleges – College of Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Natural, Applied and Health Sciences; College of Education; College of Business and Public Administration, College of Visual and Performing Arts; and the Nathan Weiss Graduate College
  • The Faculty Senate Chairperson or designee
  • Three student representatives: one full-time and one part-time undergraduate appointed annually by the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and one graduate student appointed annually by the Office of the Dean of the Nathan Weiss Graduate College
  • Bargaining agent representatives – one each from the KFT, KUAFF, CSA, IFPTE, and PBA appointed by the president of each bargaining unit
  • Fourteen members representing the major university divisions – the VP or designee and one member from the Offices of Academic Affairs, Administration and Finance, Campus Planning/Facilities, Institutional Advancement and Research, and Student Affairs

Diverse membership broadens campus participation, makes the UPC more inclusive for planning purposes, and gives the council immediate access to greater expertise across the campus community.

Meetings are scheduled monthly. During the 2009-2010 academic year, UPC meetings are scheduled for the first Monday of each month.
