The Kean University Writing Project offers professional development and leadership training in writing for teachers in all subject areas and at all instructional levels, k-16, throughout our area of service.

Through working with partner institutions on teaching writing and using writing to teach, the Project trains and coordinates teams of Teacher Consultants; these master teachers share their Writing Project supported expertise and excitement with fellow teachers and with those who need them most — their students. Through building community networks, the Kean University Writing Project coordinates writing-centered pedagogies to support excellence in teaching, professional leadership, and personal growth. For Kean University and partner institutions, our shared goal is to work with teachers as they lead their colleagues, their communities, and, most importantly, their students to experience the excitement and rewards of writing.

Kean University and the National Writing Project

The Kean University Writing Project is a regional site of the National Writing Project (NWP), a federally funded network with over 250 sites across the country. The U.S. Department of Education has named the NWP as a recommended Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Program. Ann Lieberman, a senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, called the NWP

the most successful teacher development program that I know of in the whole United States.... In learning to be both 'writers and critics,' teachers become part of the structure that expands their intellectual and emotional capacities, deepens their understanding of the complexities of teaching and learning, and enables them to be more influential in their classrooms and schools.
