What are the costs associated with edTPA?
The cost to submit an edTPA portfolio is $300. This fee will be charged to the candidates as a lab fee when they enroll in their culminating Clinical Practice, full semester full time teaching.
Any costs for retakes for any reason are the sole responsibility of the candidate.
What is a "cut score"?
This is minimum score set by the state to pass edTPA. As per the New Jersey Department of Education, Teacher Certification candidates, “must complete the assessment but do not need to meet a specific cut score if the assessment is taken during the 2018–2019 school years”. This information is subject to change.
What if a candidate's classroom contains students who may not be filmed?
The classroom and filming angle may be set up to exclude these students from the video without excluding them from instruction.
When selecting focus students, must the students have an IEP or 504 plan?
At least one of the focus students must have specific learning needs, this is not limited to a student with an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or 504 plan. A focus student can be an English language learner, a struggling reader or writer, an underperforming student or a student with gaps in academic knowledge, and/or a gifted student needing greater support or challenge.
How do I know my score?
You will receive an email from edTPA/Pearson to inform you that scores are available in your account. You must provide an email when you register with Pearson.
Your account also contains your complete edTPA history, including each assessment you've taken, the date you submitted the assessment, and your score. The following link is useful:

Who scores portfolios?
Kean University candidates submit their portfolios for ‘National Official Scoring.’ These scorers do not know the candidates, this is to ensure fairness of the evaluation process. Further, edTPA is scored by teachers and teacher educators with subject-area and grade-level expertise, and experience mentoring, teaching or supervising teachers. These scorers are trained through scoring training material authored by SCALE (Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity) at Stanford University.
Why is Pearson involved?
Evaluation Systems, a group of Pearson, collects and records the scores generated by the qualified scorers. Pearson also helps recruit scorers, manages the scoring pool, monitors scoring quality, and provides a training and delivery platform for the SCALE-developed scorer training curriculum.
What policies are in place to ensure the confidentiality and security of edTPA candidate materials and assessment data, including access to and use of video recordings?
Pearson and Stanford University have prepared the document, Confidentiality and Security of edTPA Field Test Materials and Assessment Data, to outline comprehensive security and confidentiality policies for candidates, faculty, and Pearson employees.
