Here's the 4-1-1: What is Housing Selection?
Housing Selection (formerly Room Selection) is the process in which current Kean University residents and commuters are able to search for and select a specific room or suite for the upcoming academic year. Housing Selection takes place online through the housing portal. Students will login and select the suite of their choice based on open availability. Completion of the initial housing application is required for participate.
This process will become available to incoming Freshman students beginning in May and more information will be shared via email.

In order to be eligible for Housing Selection, students must submit the following requirements no later than March 24, 2023:

Priority Housing Selection
What is Priority Housing Selection?
Priority Housing Selection grants select students early access to the Housing Selection process. Priority Selection will take place from March 30-March 31, 2023. Qualifying students will be assigned times to select a suite based on a group size of descending order (groups of 4, 3, 2, 1). This means groups of 4 will have an earlier selection time, while individual students will select last.
Who qualifies for Priority Housing Selection?
The following groups qualify for Priority Housing Selection:
- Student Athletes
- Current Division of Student Affairs Student Staff
- Students who work for the offices of Residence Life, CLS, MSC, SGA, the Wellness Center, Student Affairs Communication & Marketing Team
- Students with approved housing accommodations through the Office of Accessibility Services
- Suitemate groups established during Roommate Remixers* (Must submit suitemate commitment form provided at the event no later than March 24th)
The Office of Residence Life is working with faculty and staff from these departments to confirm student eligibility, but all students are still required to submit an application and self-select their housing assignment on the designated Priority Dates. Students who qualify for Priority Selection, but fail to participate on March 30th and 31st will have to participate in General Selection from April 3rd to April 7th.
Note: If your group has at least one member from the above categories, your group will be able to participate in Priority Housing Selection.
Keep My Room Day
Students who wish to remain in the same suite to which you are currently assigned for the 2023-2024 academic year will be able to participate in Keep My Room Day on March 29, 2023.

Room Selection Tips, Tricks, & FAQs
When does General Housing Selection take place?
General Selection will take place between April 3 - April 7, 2023. Students will participate as follows:
- Monday, April 3 - Rising Seniors
- Tuesday, April 4 - Rising Juniors
- Wednesday, April 5 - Rising Sophomores
- Thursday, April 6 and Friday, April 7 - Make-up Dates
If, for any reason, your group is unable to participate on your assigned day, you will have another opportunity to select your room on Thursday, April 6 and Friday, April 7.
Note: If your group is composed of students from different classes (rising seniors and rising juniors, or rising sophomores and rising seniors), your date will be determined by the group member with seniority.
Pro Tip #1: Be strategic.
To ensure yourself the best chances of reserving your desired space, you’ll want to be strategic. Ask yourself…Do I qualify for Priority Housing Selection? Does a member of my group qualify? Who is the most senior member of my roommate group? All of these factors will determine how and when you will be granted access to the housing portal. Earlier groups will have the largest selection of spaces to choose from.
Pro Tip #2: Have the most senior member of your Group reserve your room.
Students will get access to Housing Selection based on seniority. During General Housing Selection, rising Seniors will select first on Monday, with rising Juniors selecting the following day, and finally rising Sophomores on Wednesday. If your roommate group consists of students from different classes, delegate the most senior member of your group to reserve your space.
Pro Tip #3: Complete your Roommate Group!
Having a full group of 4 students ensures that you will not be assigned a random roommate, or have to live with other students you are not familiar with. Groups of 1-3 people should be prepared to have other students assigned to the vacant space(s) in the suite.
I am trying to assign my group, but one of my roommates is not showing up even though we are matched.
If your roommate applied after the application deadline to participate in Housing Selection, they will not appear for you to assign during Room Selection. Anyone who applied after March 24 will not be able to access the Room Selection process through April 7. However, you will be able to participate in late selection later in April!
I currently live off-campus, but would like to live on campus next year. Can I participate?
Yes! Room Selection is open to commuters and residents alike.
I want a single-occupancy space. What are my chances of obtaining one?
Kean provides a limited number of single-occupancy rooms to upperclassmen students. While these spaces will be made available during Priority and General Housing Selection, it is expected that they will be reserved early.
Residents are encouraged to create a roommate group to ensure they are living with friends or individuals they are compatible with. Students can also use the Roommate Search option through the housing portal, or meet potential roommates at one of our upcoming events. Learn more below!
If you select a double-occupancy bedroom with an open space, you should be prepared to have a roommate. Housing Selection will open during the academic year, and administrative assignments will also take place.
Can I keep my current housing assignment?
Students who wish to remain in the same suite to which you are currently assigned for the 2023-2024 academic year will be able to participate in Keep My Room Day on March 29, 2023.
ALL group members must submit the following items no later than March 24 in order to participate:
- 2023-2024 Housing Application
- $125 Application Fee
- Completed Keep My Room form (available March 1)
You are NOT able to participate it:
- You are currently assigned to a single-occupancy room. If you have an approved medical single (as designated by the Office of Accessibility Services), you will be able to pick from your same room and/or reserved single spaces during Priority Housing Selection.
- Rising sophomores are NOT eligible to participate in Keep My Room Day. All current freshmen will need to relocate to an upperclassmen residence hall for the 2023-2024 academic year.
What if I miss the Housing Selection application deadline?
Room Selection allows current and future residents early and exclusive access to reserve their housing. Students who do not apply by 11:59 PM on March 24 will not be eligible to participate in Housing Selection. Residence Life will open a Late Housing Selection Process on April 24th for anyone who applied after the deadline or missed Housing Selection. Roommate Search will remain open and late applicants will be able to select from available spaces.
How will my GPA impact my ability to participate in Housing Selection?
At this time, the Office of Residence Life will not be verifying student grade point averages of Housing Selection participants. However, prior to the Fall semester, we will verify if your GPA falls below our minimum required to reside on campus. If you are not eligible to live on campus due to your GPA you will be contacted prior to the start of the Fall 2023 semester. If you are concerned about being impacted by this policy, please contact our Office directly.
I am an incoming freshmen for Fall 2023. Can I participate in Housing Selection?
This year, incoming freshmen students will be able to self-select their housing assignment for the 2023-2024 academic year beginning May 1, 2023. Students are still able to search for a roommate or suitemate beginning March 1, 2023. More information will be shared in the weeks to come.
