Room Selection is the process in which current Kean University residents and commuters are able to choose a specific room for the upcoming academic year. This process is not available to incoming Freshman students. Room Selection will take place online through the housing portal. Students will login and select the suite of their choice based on open availability.

In order to be eligible for Room Selection, students must submit the following requirements no later than April 1, 2022:
- 2022-2023 Housing Application
- Housing Contract
- $125 Application Fee
- Housing Preferences & Questionnaire

How to Check Room & Building Availability
To help you prepare, we have updated the housing portal to allow students to check the current availability of suites by residence hall for 2022-2023.
Residential Student Services encourages all students to check availability ahead of Priority and General Room Selection. To view the availability of our housing options follow these steps:
- Log into the housing portal.
- Select "Housing Assignments & Changes."
- Click the Search button under "Room Selection" Room Availability Check for Room Selection.
- This will bring you to the Room Options page, where we have provided floor plans for each suite type by building.
- You can search by "Room Type" using the drop down menu.
- You can also search by Building Community.
Ensure that the housing options available to you include all upperclassmen housing options and that you are not experiencing technical difficulties. Please note, you are NOT selection your housing assignment at this time. This is simply to familiarize yourself with the portal and view current vacancies.
What is Priority Room Selection?
Priority Room Selection grants select students early access to the Room Selection process. Priority Room Selection will take place on April 14, 2022. Qualifying students will be assigned times to select a suite based on a group size of descending order (groups of 4, 3, 2, 1). This means groups of 4 will have an earlier selection time, while individual students will select last.
Who qualifies for Priority Room Selection?
The following groups qualify for Priority Room Selection:
- Student Athletes
- Current Division of Student Affairs Student Staff
- Students with approved housing accommodations through the Office of Accessibility Services
- Suitemate groups established during Roommate Remixers or Suitemate Shuffle events* (Must submit suitemate commitment form provided at the event no later than April 1)
The Office of Residential Student Services will be confirming with the appropriate departments and will contact eligible students.
Note: If your group has at least one member from the above categories, your group will be able to participate in Priority Room Selection.
Students who qualify for Priority Room Selection, but fail to participate on April 14 will have to participate in general Room Selection from April 18-21, 2022.
How will my GPA impact my ability to participate in Room Selection?
At this time, the Office of Residential Student Services will not be verifying student grade point averages of Room Selection participants. However, prior to the Fall semester, we will verify if your GPA falls below our minimum required to reside on campus. If you are not eligible to live on campus due to your GPA you will be contacted prior to the start of the Fall 2022 semester. If you are concerned about being impacted by this policy, please contact our Office directly.
When does General Room Selection take place?
General Room Selection will take place between April 18 and April 21, 2022. Students will participate as follows:
- Monday, April 18 - Gold - Rising Seniors
- Tuesday, April 19 - Silver - Rising Juniors
- Wednesday, April 20 - Bronze - Rising Sophomores
- Thursday, April 21 - Make-up Date
Each group will be assigned a time frame based on group size to access the housing portal. Larger groups will have access to Room Selection earlier, while individuals without a group will go last. If, for any reason, your group is unable to participate on your assigned day, you will have another opportunity to select your room on Thursday, April 21.
Note: If your group is composed of students from different classes (rising seniors and rising juniors, or rising sophomores and rising seniors), your date will be determined by the group member with seniority. Additionally, the group leader in your housing application should be the person with the most seniority.
All applicants will receive an email with detailed instructions on how to select your desired suite prior to their Room Selection date.
I am a graduate student. When can I participate in Room Selection?
Graduate students that have submitted a complete application will be able to self-select their housing for the 2022-2023 academic year on April 222, 2022 beginning at 9:00 AM until Monday, April 25, 2022 at 11:59 PM.
The graduate housing floor is located in Burch Hall and consists of two single-occupancy bedrooms in a suite, you students can anticipate sharing a common area with one other graduate student.
How should I create my roommate group?
By now, you may have a group of friends you would enjoy living on campus with. Whether you are a group of 1, 2, 3 or 4, in order to participate in Room Selection, ALL group members must complete a 2022-2023 housing application, submit their housing contract along with the $125 non-refundable application fee.
In planning for Room Selection, it is important for your group to plan ahead and designate a leader. The leader of a roommate group is the student who creates the group through the housing portal and extends the invitations to the other group members to join. The leader will also be responsible for logging into the housing portal and to select a space on behalf of the group.
Why is this important? Because if your leader qualifies for Priority Room Selection, your group will be able to select your space earlier! Similarly, if you are a rising Senior in your group, it may be best for them to be the "leader" in order to access Room Selection earlier.
Please note, the last day to add anyone to your roommate group is April 6, 2022. All outstanding requests must be accepted by this date. Any invitation that has not been accepted will not be included in your group.
Ensure your leader is available on your assigned Room Selection date and time. Specific times will be announced in April, ahead of Room Selection days.
I am having trouble viewing or accepting the Roommate Group invitation. Why?
The most common error we see is varying responses to the Gender Inclusive Housing question on the housing application. The Office of Residential Student Services must ensure that all students who reside in a suite together are in agreement on this matter. Therefore, you will not be able to view or accept your group's invitation unless each member has the same response (Yes or No) to the gender inclusive housing question on the housing application. Please note, this question appears twice on the application - first as a stand-alone question ahead of creating your roommate group and again in the housing questionnaire. Make sure your answers in both places match, as well as that your group member's responses are the same.
Group members should also coordinate which building they prefer to live in and the order in which your building preferences are ranked. Differences in response to this section of the application may impact your ability to accept your group's invitation and/or affect your placement.

What if I want to keep my current housing assignment?
Students who wish to remain in the same suite to which you are currently assigned for the 2022-2023 academic year will be able to participate in Keep My Room Day on April 12, 2022. This opportunity is only available to groups of 2, 3, and 4 students.
ALL group members must submit the following items no later than April 1 in order to participate:
- 2022-2023 Housing Application
- Housing Contract
- $125 Application Fee
ALL group members must submit the following items no later than April 6 in order to participate:
- Completed Keep My Room form located here
Note: Rising sophomores are NOT eligible to participate in Keep My Room Day. All current freshmen will need to relocate to an upperclassmen residence hall for the 2022-2023 academic year.
I bought out my bedroom this semester. Will I be able to buyout my current or new space for Fall 2022?
Any current buyouts were only approved for the Spring 2022 semester. Students who have bought out their bedroom are eligible to participate in Keep My Room Day and can remain in their bedroom or suite, however they should be prepared to welcome another student into the vacant space.
The Office of Residential Student Services will not be approving buyouts for Fall 2022 at this time. If you feel you may qualify for a medical single-occupancy bedroom, please review the Office of Accessibility Services’ website and contact them for more information.
We understand that this is a lot of information and you may have additional questions about Room Selection.
