ES 4971 – 4973 Section 02 Independent Study
– Petrology (4 Credits)
Meeting Time: Tuesday and Thursday 4:30 pm - 7:15 pm, plus three weekend field trips

Prerequisite: Geology 1200
Course objectives: We will study the genesis of important rock types, and will examine them closely in the field and laboratory. In the laboratory, students will improved their rock identification skills with hand specimens and thin sections.
Responsibilities: During class your instructor will briefly outline the main topics in a chapter. You are expected to read each chapter and to be ready to answer questions about it in the class following.
Required Equipment: Safety Glasses, stout boots, sunscreen, a hat, a backpack, water bottle, One “Rite in the Rain” All-weather Geological Field Book, transparent ruler/protractor, mechanical & colored pencils.
Grading: Your grade will be based on quizzes (25%), a Final (30%), reading and homework preparedness (5%), a field project presentation (30%) , and a Lab Practicum (10%).

Paleozoic Passive Margin and Forearc Basin Sediments in Northern New Jersey and Adjacent Pennsylvania
2. Newark Basin rift valley basalt flows, Diabase ring dikes, and fluvial and lacustrine sediments; some copper-enriched deposits due to hydrothermal and contact metamorphism.
3. Wissahickon Creek in Chestnut Hill, PA. Morning: examine the rocks of Ordovician Nappes as we approach granitic and basaltic intrusions. Afternoon: exploration of additional areas.
Field Trip weekend dates to be arranged. No fees; bring water and food. You must be capable of hiking 2 miles over rough terrain.
