Summer at Kean is a great way to keep kids engaged and learning through the summer months.  Kean University offers a wide range of pre-college and summer camp programs for all interests: athletics, science, performance arts... and much more!  
 
Kean’s pre-college summer programs are developed and led by Kean University faculty and held on campus in state-of-the art facilities in Union, New Jersey and on Kean’s newest campus in the New Jersey Highlands.

Kean University Pre-College and Summer Youth Programs

Camp Premiere: engages middle and high school students, in the magic of theater.

Description

Session 1: Theatremakers

Students learn the elements of acting and playwriting through theatre games and acting exercises that help them translate their creative ideas into original performances for the stage. Working in a fun, creative, and collaborative environment, campers craft and star in their own play. This camp session culminates in a public performance of the campers' work, followed by a certificate presentation and reception for the participants.

Session 2: Actors Studio

Students focus on the craft of acting, including scene work, monologue preparation, movement, and voice/speech. Students work closely with industry professionals to hone their skills. Campers perform monologues as well as scenes from contemporary plays, some of which have been developed through the Premiere Play Festival. This camp session culminates in a public performance of monologues and scenes, followed by a certificate presentation and reception for the participants.

NJ DECA Summer Leadership and Competitive Events Program: prepares high school and college students for successful careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

Description

NJ DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in high schools and colleges for successful careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. This overnight immersion experience is designed for current and prospective DECA students to learn from industry professionals, participate in mock events and develop new skills through expert leadership training.

NJCSTM Group Summer Scholars Research Program (GSSRP): allows high-school students interested in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) careers to participate in dynamic hands-on and group activities.

Description

The GSSRP is a 6-week, hands-on research experience aimed at attracting and developing talented students who are interested in pursuing an education in a STEM field.  Upon entering the program students are divided into small research teams that are paired with faculty mentors conducting authentic scientific research in the following six areas: Analytical Chemistry, Virtual Reality & Scientific Visualization, Microbiomes & Bioinformatics, Cancer Biology, Computational Mathematics and Modern Drug Discovery.  Students learn how to conduct basic and applied research during this program and develop a true appreciation of the scientific research process while contributing first hand to the acquisition of new scientific knowledge.  Students engage in weekly meetings with faculty and team members to solve problems and discuss results, novel ideas and the latest scientific literature.

Steps to Your Future: college-immersion program open to young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Description

Steps To your Future Day/Overnight Pre-College Program is for young adults with autism and other special needs who are interested in getting a glimpse of the college experience. Campers will be immersed in activities to learn everyday life skills to aide in the transition of becoming more independent in a college setting. They will explore Kean University’s College Campus to identify and inspire interests. There is also an option for campers to stay overnight in the Kean University dorms on Wednesday July 25, 2018 and Thursday July 26, 2018 to further enhance the college experience. 24 hour supervision and therapeutic activities will be provided by faculty and students from Kean’s Occupational Therapy department.

Environmental Science at Wenzhou Kean University: Meet and interact with high school students in Wenzhou, China.

Description  The WKU Pre-College Summer Program is a Travel-Learn program for high school students to study ecological and environmental sciences through field and lab activities while earning three college credits. The program brings NJ high school students (entering 11-12th grade) to Wenzhou Kean University (WKU) to meet and interact with high school students from Wenzhou, China. Students will participate in lectures, lab and field activities, undertake group projects, and present their projects in WKU and also in the “Student Research Day” hosted in April every year at Kean University. Program participants will be touring areas surrounding Wenzhou and Beijing in order to further expose them to Chinese culture and history. The program is scheduled over a two-week period in July 2018. The US students will earn three (3) college credits for a course entitled Introduction to Environmental Research (ENV 1050) by taking part in this opportunity.
The course fee of $3600 includes airfare (from Newark NJ to Wenzhou, China) and ground transportation in China, visa application, all food and lodging, a three-day tour in Beijing (Great Walls, Forbidden City, and Hutong, etc.) and all course instruction and the three college credits. Pre- and post-trip meetings will be scheduled to help students prepare for the travel and present their work in a scientific format.

Michael Graves College / Robert Busch School of Design Precollege Program: Thinking Creatively Design Camp​: teens learn from Kean University design faculty and other professionals to develop original design solutions to real-world projects.

Description

In the Michael Graves College / Robert Busch School of Design Precollege Program: Thinking Creatively Design Camp, participants will work with Kean design faculty, students, and visiting professional designers and art directors in a fun, creative, and collaborative environment to develop original design solutions to real-world assignments and to expand creative thinking. Campers will learn the foundations of creative design through innovative, active exercises and projects. Skills in computer graphics, 3D technologies (print & laser), and comprehensive mockup accompany direction and guidance in critical and creative thinking for developing design solutions. They will also get a chance to see their work displayed in an exhibition and virtually on the Thinking Creatively Design Camp social networking page. Activities include individual studio projects, a professionally organized design charrette, field trips to museums/galleries in New York and a professional studio, critiques, group and team studio projects, and a final portfolio exhibition and reception.

Upward Bound- Kean University: 9th and 10th grade students are invited to apply for the Upward Bound Project where they learn the skills necessary to pursue and attain a bachelor’s degree.

Description

Kean University's College of Natural Applied and Health Sciences offers an intensive Saturday and summer six week residential program for students beginning in the 9th grade. The Upward Bound Project is one of the eight Federal TRIO Programs designed to identify and provide students from low income families and/or families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, with the skills and motivation necessary to pursue and attain a baccalaureate degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school, enroll and graduate from college in four years

The purpose of the program is to provide the skills and motivation necessary to enroll and graduate from college in a 4 year time frame, upon high school graduation.

Program activities will be held on the Kean University campus located in Union, NJ and the target high schools. The academic component is held during the months of September-May. The summer residential component will be held during the months of June -August.

The academic year and Saturday classes will include courses in math, science, science labs, foreign language, literature, corporate mentoring, and STEM research with university faculty, tutoring, test preparation and financial literacy. Participants are provided college/university tours, parent/student financial aid workshops, career workshops and cultural enrichment activities, along with group, individual and career counseling. Assistance with the college application process including college and SAT fee waivers are available for eligible participants.

Classes are taught by Kean University administration, faculty, professional staff, and professionals from the public and corporate sector. Students participate in the program until they graduate from high school.

Age/Target Eligible students are 9th and 10th graders who attend public schools in East Orange, and Elizabeth, New Jersey. Each student must be enrolled in a college preparatory curriculum. Participants must have an academic need and meet the Federal TRIO Program guidelines.
Cost and Registration

Program tuition is supported by the US Department of Education, Kean University and Novartis Pharmaceuticals.

Applications are with the target high school guidance counselors or you may contact the program office to request an Upward Bound application.

Completed applications will be reviewed by the Upward Bound Admissions Committee. Applicants that are recommended by the Upward Bound Admissions Committee will be contacted for a personal interview with their parent (s) or legal guardian. The applicant will be notified in writing of their admission status three weeks after the interview.

Accepted participants and their parents and/or primary care giver must attend a mandatory orientation to understand the expectations and requirements of the program. Completed applications must be received on or before October 1 of each year.

Kean Elite Girls Volleyball Camp

Description For girls entering 9th-12th grade who have previously played organized volleyball and are intending to play in high school. Players will be exposed to advanced strategies and training techniques in all facets of the game. The College Prep Camp will expose your daughter to college coaches from several schools to see how different coaches and different programs train their players. You should come away from the camp with insight into the training of a dozen or so college programs.

Kean Boys Volleyball

Description

The camps are directed by and all instruction is derived from Kean University’s Head Men’s Coach Charlie Ginex’s proven winning system. Kean Volleyball has established a tradition of excellence faster than any program in the history of DIII Volleyball. We have built this tradition on the court with 6 trips to the NCAA DIII tournament and five visits to the “Elite 8" & a 104-6 record in conference play over the last seven years. Other notable program highlights include:

Rapid Fire Field Hockey Camp

 
Description

This camp will focus on teaching and improving basic skills and fundamentals of the game of field hockey.  The camp is run by Kean University's and 2016 NJAC College Coach of the Year, Leslie LaFronz. Specialty drills are created by our experienced international coaching staff and we guarantee player skill advancement through creative, fun and motivating coaching. All drills will be customized to challenge individual players.

Per request, High School teams will be kept together in training cells.  Otherwise, individuals will be grouped together by age and experience.

12th Annual La Cross County Camp and Competition

Description

This is a team camp and tournament held on the beautiful campus of Kean University.  Athletes will have use of multiple turf fields, and state of the art athletic facilities. At the end of the week there will be both an all-star and future-star's games.  The camp will focus on enhancing individual play and team concepts. Competitive games will be played daily against varsity level competition.

Carolyn Dorfman Dance- NJ Summer Dance 2018

 
Description

Immerse yourself in the world of contemporary dance and the dynamic art, artists and processes of Carolyn Dorfman Dance. Daily classes are offered in modern/contemporary technique, repertory, partnering, Pilates, Body Therapies, and workshops with renowned guest artists. Join our inner circle through daily meetings with the company. The week culminates in a performance featuring all participants and the Carolyn Dorfman Dance company. Description

Technology and fun are the core ideas in which we bring you RLS Media Camp. This summer camp features several distinct courses across varied areas of media interest. Studio2Stage

 

The Irish Music and Dance Experience

Description

Studio2Stage is a performance experience for amateur musicians, singers and Irish dancers, who wish to break into the touring show industry. The selected performers from all over the world, work together at Kean University to learn, produce and stage a professional show on the final night which is open to the general public.  Dancers and musicians will witness first hand, life as a professional performer, experience living away from home, making new friends, immersed in nine days of intense rehearsals and watching a full scale show production come to life! Learn about performance production and management, the role of a tour manager and dance captain, what to look for in your first touring contract and much more! We want to pass down the knowledge and experience that we and others working with us have learned over the years assisting amateur performers in getting closer to achieving their dream.
