Academic and Instructional Mentor and Freshman Student
Coordinators
A key component of CAS is the large, professional, friendly and
competent student staff know as Academic Instructional Mentors,
(AIMs). They are carefully selected, upper class students who
are representative of the student population they serve.
AIMs receive extensive training to meet the needs of first year
students. Each AIM is assigned to Transition to Kean Class as
a co-instructor for the course, and work closely with the instructors
to plan and deliver lessons. Additionally, they help mentor new
students and introduce them to the University's academic and student
support services.
AIMs are also trained as academic advisors and assist the freshmen
in selecting the courses they need for their first and second
semesters. They are able to advise the freshman as to what academic
classes they need as well as give suggestions on the sequence
and content of the courses.
AIMs are also familiar with the many and varied services provided
by the University. They will refer students with academic problems
to tutoring; for those with disabilities, they may refer for assistance
at the Office of Community and Disability Services. Or, for students
wishing to join a club, AIMs may suggest they pay a visit to the
Office of Student Life and Leadership.
