Readmission to Kean

To be eligible for readmission to Kean University, you must meet the following requirements:

• You left the University in good standing (i.e. you were not dismissed). This means you were not dismissed from the University.    
• You have a cumulative GPA (i.e. combined from all institutions attended including Kean) of 2.0 or higher.
• New Jersey City University (NJCU) Legacy Students: If you previously attended NJCU prior to Fall 2025 and have never attended Kean University, you must submit the Admissions Readmit application, regardless of your previous NJCU enrollment status. 
• Academically dismissed from Kean University. If you were dismissed, please contact the Office of Student Retention & Academic Innovation at retain@kean.edu for information about seeking reinstatement.  
• Undergraduate students: You have not been enrolled at Kean for three or more semesters. If it has been fewer than three semesters since you were last enrolled, please visit the Academic Advising Requirements page for next steps.  
• Graduate students: You have not enrolled at Kean for at least three but fewer than six semesters. If you have not been enrolled for six or more semesters, you will need to submit a new application for admission to your graduate program. Visit Graduate Admissions page

Important Things to Know About Readmission 

• Transferring Credits. If you attended another college or university after leaving Kean or NJCU, you must have your official transcripts sent to ugprocessing@kean.edu .  
• Important: If you were originally admitted to Kean before 2010 or NJCU before 2019, we strongly encourage you to submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities you attended before Kean or NJCU. 
• Readmission to Kean does not automatically mean readmission to your major. You will be readmitted as an intended major. To officially declare your major, you must meet the current admission or declaration requirements for that program—including the major you had before leaving Kean. 
• Choose an intended major on your application. Your previously earned credits will be evaluated based on the academic program you are applying to. You can review the Transfer Credit Guidelines for more information. 
• Changing your major? If you choose a different major than the one you had when you last attended Kean, you must meet the current program and curriculum requirements in effect when you are readmitted. 
• Current degree requirements apply. If you are readmitted, you will follow the curriculum and degree requirements in effect at the time of your readmission—not the requirements that were in place when you were first admitted. 
• Complete your degree within 10 years. You must complete your degree requirements within 10 years of your original matriculation date. An extension may be considered if you submit a written request to the appropriate college dean.

The Application Process

Application Fee 

Good news! The $75 application fee is waived for students applying for readmission. 

Application Review 

Once your application is marked complete, it is usually reviewed within 3–5 days. 

You will receive your readmission decision by email, and your decision will also be available on your application portal.

Financial Aid

• Once you are accepted for readmission, submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so you can be considered for financial aid support for the coming semester.  The FAFSA can be found at studentaid.gov.
• If you were on academic probation during your last semester at Kean may still receive financial aid when you return.  In addition to filing the FAFSA, you may need review from the SAP (Satisfactory Appeal Process) Committee.  Learn more by visiting the Office of Financial Aid SAP Policy page. 

Reinstatement After Being Academically Dismissed

If you had to step away from Kean due to academic dismissal, your first step will be to seek Reinstatement.  Our primary concern is to support your successful return.  As part of the Reinstatement review process, you will have the opportunity to share your story.  Tell us about what happened in the past and what has changed or is different since you last attended Kean.  This will help us work on a collaborative plan to track you towards your academic success.
