Finding and Applying to Internships
Internships provide CMJ students with valuable hands-on experience in communication, media, journalism and related fields. They are a great way to apply classroom knowledge, build professional skills, expand your network and gain experience before graduation.
CMJ students are strongly encouraged to complete an internship that aligns with their academic program and career interests.
Before You Get Started
Students interested in completing an internship should begin searching early, preferably during the semester before they plan to intern.
Internships should relate to the student’s academic program and professional or career interests. Both paid and unpaid internships may be considered for academic credit if they meet University and academic program requirements.
Students interested in receiving academic credit should confirm their eligibility and requirements before beginning an internship. Securing an internship does not automatically guarantee academic credit; the internship must be reviewed and approved through the University’s internship process.
Internships for Academic Credit
Students may earn 1, 2 or 3 academic credits for an approved internship:
• 1 credit – 40 internship hours
• 2 credits – 80 internship hours
• 3 credits – 120 internship hours
Students seeking academic credit must secure an internship related to their academic and professional goals and submit the internship for approval through Handshake Experiences.
Internship credit cannot be awarded retroactively. The internship and academic credit must take place during the same semester.

Finding an Internship
Students are responsible for securing their own internship and are encouraged to explore opportunities that align with their interests and career goals.
Handshake is Kean University’s primary platform for searching for internships, jobs and employer opportunities.
Students can also connect with CMJ faculty, explore opportunities directly through companies and organizations, attend career fairs and networking events, and utilize Career Services for assistance with their internship search, résumé, cover letter and interview preparation.

Non-Credit Internships
Students are also encouraged to gain internship experience even if they do not need or are not seeking academic credit.
Kean offers a non-credit internship option that allows eligible students to receive formal recognition of their internship experience on their Co-Curricular Transcript.
