Received in New York October 29th 1755 of Peter Van Brugh Livingston: a larger packet with letters from His Excellency Major General Shirley for the British Ministry, which I do hereby promise to put into the post office in England at the first port where I shall stop, for which trouble I do hereby acknowledge to have received ten shillings. I do also hereby further promise that in case I should meet with an enemy on my passage and find that I must unavoidably be taken, that I will fling said packet overboard and do all in my power to prevent its falling into the Enemy’s hands, and that I will by no means do so unless I am sure to be taken. The said packet is put up into a bag ready charged with weights for sinking and directing on the outside “Letter for the British Minister.”
