Literacy Tips

Overview:

  1. Choose books your child is interested in.
  2. Let your child pick books they want to read.
  3. Make reading part of your daily routine like 15 min before bedtime.
  4. Make reading fun, like using different voices for different characters of the story.
  5. Make reading interacting by asking your child questions about the book.

Before the Reading Activity:

  1. Show your child the title, author’s, and illustrator’s name on the book cover.
  2. Make a prediction, a guess about what you think the book is about.

During the Reading Activity:

  1. During reading, ask lots of wh questions (who, what, where, when, why, how). This will get them thinking deeper about the story!
  2. During reading, ask your child to recall story events (e.g., What happened to the bear?).
  3. During reading, ask questions connecting the story to your child’s real world (e.g., Have you ever slept in a tent?).
  4. Ask your child about what is happening in the pictures of the book.
  5. Pick a new word from the story or text. Use the link below to learn what it means.
