Kean Alumnus and Cybersecurity Leader Establishes Student Scholarship
Kean University recently established a new cybersecurity student scholarship made possible by a generous donation from alumnus Scott N. Schober ’92, a nationally recognized expert on cybersecurity.
The Berkeley Varitronics Cybersecurity Student Scholarship will support one Kean cybersecurity student each year, advancing the university’s mission to prepare future innovators in the field of digital security.
Schober, president and CEO of Berkeley Varitronics Systems, made a donation to support the scholarship. He is a member of both the Kean University Foundation Board of Directors and the Kean University Cybersecurity Advisory Board.
“I’ve always been fascinated with how things work,” Schober said. “Kean helped me turn that curiosity into a career as a relentless scientist, engineer and innovator, and now I want to help today’s students do the same.”
A prolific author and sought-after global speaker, Schober has written three best-selling books on cybersecurity and corporate espionage. His expertise is built on decades of experience as a business leader, engineer, and inventor. Among his innovations are Berkeley’s cell phone detection tools, used worldwide to combat contraband cell phone use in correctional, military, government, and corporate facilities.
The scholarship will benefit students enrolled in Kean’s cybersecurity program within the Department of Computer Science and Technology. The program prepares students to protect digital infrastructure through rigorous technical training, real-world problem-solving, and interdisciplinary learning. With a curriculum that bridges theory and application, Kean’s cybersecurity students graduate ready to confront modern threats and lead in the rapidly evolving field of information security.
“The scholarship is a tremendous step in supporting students interested in pursuing degrees with a concentration in cybersecurity, especially as Kean University makes even greater strides in embracing artificial intelligence and innovation,” said Bill Miller, president and CEO of the Kean University Foundation.
The new scholarship reflects Kean’s deepening commitment to technology-driven education and student support. By investing in students who will defend against emerging digital threats, this gift strengthens Kean’s leadership in preparing ethical, future-ready professionals.
