Kean Celebrates the Lunar New Year with Performances, Games and Art

Student Organization brought cultural awareness to Kean University’s Union campus with the Chinese New Year Kickoff on Tuesday, February 13, celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Dog.

The festivities at the Center for Academic Success began with a traditional dragon dance ceremony, and included games and activities like Chinese checkers and calligraphy, food, and prizes for students who took part in Chinese culture trivia.

As the Kean community was celebrating the Lunar New Year, an opening reception for a new exhibition at the Karl and Helen Burger Gallery was being held. The exhibition, Vibrant Bounty, explores Chinese folk art from the Shaanxi region.

Erica Eyssalenne, a political science major from Long Island, appreciates the inclusion of various cultures on campus. She studied abroad at Kean’s campus in China and has many friends who transferred to the Union campus from Wenzhou-Kean University in Wenzhou.

“It’s always good to learn more about the world around you. It opens your mind, and it’s important as students and as people to be as diverse as possible with your experiences,” she said.
