'Kean Research' Welcome Message from the Vice President for Research

Susannah Porterfield, ed.d., vp for research

Susannah Porterfield, Ed.D., Vice President for Research

Kean University Community,

Welcome to the first edition of Kean Research! Six months ago, I joined Kean University as the Vice President for Research. In just a short time, it has become clear to me that Kean is, first and foremost, a community, and like in any community, each member’s role is essential for us to be successful. I am excited to build on the momentum started by the administration, faculty, staff and students to expand on the University’s position as the state’s urban research university and move Kean toward R2 status. This Carnegie designation will show the community, state and world that Kean University is a place focused on research.

Over the past year, Kean has augmented its research portfolio, expanded education and outreach initiatives, and formed translational partnerships to bring wide-ranging benefits to urban communities and beyond. Kean faculty are studying hydroponic vegetable production, invasive species and animal reproduction at the cellular level. We are partnering on innovation projects, helping community members finish college or find employment and diversifying STEM education. We continue to expand opportunities for Kean students to participate in research activities across our campuses through the Center for Undergraduate Research.

There is still much work to do as we further develop our research focus areas, enhance collaborations across the university and improve administrative processes for research active faculty. I am proud of my team, thank them for all they do and look forward to what we will accomplish together this academic year.

The Kean Research newsletter, which will be released each semester, will highlight some of the incredible ongoing research at the University as well as spotlight the people who are conducting this work. Please enjoy it and share it with your peers. With a shared vision, embodied in our community, we will drive discovery forward. Go Cougars!

Sincerely,

Susannah Porterfield, Ed.D.
