International Freshmen Applicants 

Welcome, and congratulations on taking your first step toward becoming part of Kean University’s diverse, international community! Below is a step-by-step guide to help international freshman applicants navigate the admissions process. 

Step 1: Submit Your Application 

You can apply using one of the following platforms: 

Step 2: Pay the Application Fee 

  • A non-refundable fee of $75 USD is required.
  • You can pay directly through the online application portal when submitting your application

Step 3: Submit Required Supporting Documents

 

Academic Transcript Evaluation

Applicants must submit a course-by-course evaluation (including GPA) of their official high school/secondary school transcript or mark sheet.

  • Evaluations must be completed by an agency affiliated with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
  • Visit www.naces.org for a full list.

English Language Proficiency

Required for all applicants whose secondary education was completed in a country where English is not the principal language.

Accepted Tests & Minimum Scores:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • Minimum Score: Internet-based: 79; Paper-based: 550
    • TOEFL exams taken after January 21, 2026 will require a minimum total score of 4
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • Minimum Score: 6.0
  • Duolingo English Test
    • Minimum Score: 105
Important Notes: 
  • Scores must be from tests taken within the past two years
  • Scores must be sent directly from the testing agency
English Proficiency Waiver Policy: 

Applicants may request a waiver by submitting official documentation stating that they have completed secondary schooling from an institution where English is the language of instruction

 Note: Applicants to fully-online programs are not eligible for English proficiency waivers. 

Standardized Test Scores (Optional)

Standardized Testing Scores from SAT or ACT – please include Kean's College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) number 2517. Kean will accept the ACT as well as the SAT scores for the purpose of admission, scholarship, placement test exemption and/or program qualification consideration. Applicants may submit scores from both of these two standardized tests. Kean will super score, taking the highest level score of the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math (M) sections from the SAT, and the highest composite score of the ACT.

Optional Materials (Recommended)

  • Two letters of recommendation (in English) from teachers, counselors, employers, coaches, etc.
  • Personal essay (1–2 pages, in English) describing your educational and career goals 
Special Note for Spanish-Speaking Program Applicants 

If you are an international student admitted to Kean’s Spanish-Speaking Program, please contact the Office of Admissions for specific program requirements.
