Art History Minor
Whether you are drawn to Art History out of curiosity, an interest in visual culture, or a love of museums and artifacts, the Art History minor can complement your studies. This minor can be paired with any major and offers both intellectual enrichment and practical value.
Students in the Art History minor develop strong skills in visual analysis, research, and critical thinking. The curriculum also emphasizes cultural understanding, helping students recognize diverse perspectives and connect historical contexts to contemporary issues. Art History students build clear and confident written and oral communication skills, learning to present ideas, defend interpretations, and explain complex visual information to a range of audiences.
Art historical knowledge is valuable in fields such as museums, galleries, nonprofits, corporations, healthcare, education, and business—any setting where visual material is created, interpreted, displayed, or communicated. For students considering museum work or graduate study, Art History provides essential preparation.
For fine art majors, an art history minor helps you situate your own practice within the larger context of global art history. It reinforces the skills of observation you’re already learning in studio classes and gives you the opportunity to apply them to the work of other artists. If you are pursuing a BA in Fine Art or BFA in Studio Art, you may need only two additional Art History courses to complete the minor.

Internships
Internships in the arts are an excellent means of entering the arts industry in the New York metropolitan area. Kean students may earn three academic credits for approved off-campus internships, which can also count as an elective toward the Art History minor. Some internship opportunities offer paid positions or stipends.
Recent internship placements include institutions such as the Newark Museum, Alexander Gray Gallery, Visual Arts Center, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among others. For further information, contact Dr. Lewis Kachur lkachur@kean.edu
