Timeline
✔ March 5, 2025: The NJCU Board of Trustees voted to pursue a strategic merger with Kean.
✔ May 15, 2025: Kean and NJCU signed a letter of intent to pursue a merger.
✔ July 1, 2025: The Shared Services Agreement between Kean and NJCU became effective.
✔ Summer 2025: Kean and NJCU submitted preliminary forms to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the accrediting agency for both institutions, to initiate a review process.
✔ October 1, 2025: Kean and NJCU signed a definitive agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the merger.
✔ October 29, 2025: Kean submitted more detailed plans for the integration to Middle States.
✔ November 2025: NJCU submitted additional plans for the integration to Middle States.
◻ Spring 2026 (Expected): Middle States will review the submissions and determine whether to approve the merger.
◻ Summer 2026 (Expected): Upon approval, Kean will acquire control of NJCU. At that time, NJCU employees will become employees of Kean University.
Following approval from the U.S. Department of Education and other regulators, the merger of NJCU into Kean will be complete. NJCU students become Kean students. NJCU becomes Kean Jersey City, an additional location of Kean University. NJCU relinquishes Middle States accreditation.
