Division of General Education and Interdisciplinary Studies
About
The Division of General Education and Interdisciplinary Studies (DGEIS), housed within the Division of Academic Affairs, brings together the School of General Studies with the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies to foster collaboration around both the general education program and interdisciplinary initiatives. It supports innovative teaching practices and curriculum development to inspire and serve the needs of Kean students in all majors.
Through the General Education (GE) Program students learn to integrate knowledge and methods to address historical and contemporary questions from multiple perspectives. The General Education Program develops habits of mind including proficiency in communication in both oral and written forms, quantitative literacy, critical thinking, and information literacy. It offers students the opportunity to engage with core values in the areas of ethical judgment and integrity, active citizenship and diversity. Students in GE courses sharpen their research skills and collaborate with their instructors and peers to study and evaluate topics, themes and questions from global and local perspectives.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies creates opportunities to advance collaborative teaching and research and to expand interdisciplinary affiliations and partnerships across campus.
