Advertising Student Wins Prestigious International Competition

Alicia Novoa

Alicia Novoa, a Warren resident, graduated from KU in May 2023. Alicia entered her final advertising portfolio into the prestigious international New Blood x Editor X competition, sponsored by D&AD, a nonprofit that celebrates and stimulates the finest in design and advertising, based in the UK.  She won; fifty+ industry-leading judges acknowledged her excellence from among 900 entries. This is an extraordinary achievement because she was competing against graduates of advertising portfolio schools (which are 5th year and graduate degree programs).

Alicia now works at Droga5 in New York, an award-winning agency.

During her last semester in the BFA: Advertising degree program at KU, several esteemed advertising agencies offered internships to Alicia. She selected Digitas, where she had the opportunity to work on actual client projects and gain experience. Alicia said, “The inclusive and collaborative culture fostered strong connections with colleagues of diverse backgrounds made me feel valued and supported. Engaging events and activities, from team-building workshops to industry talks, added vibrancy to the internship and facilitated lasting friendships with fellow interns and employees. Access to extensive learning resources and training programs further enhanced my skills and knowledge in advertising, leaving me with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the exceptional internship at Digitas.”

Deborah Ceballos taught Alicia in the Advertising Portfolio course and advised her. Prof. Ceballos said, “Alicia is a relentless problem-solver with a heart of gold. She fearlessly pursued unique solutions to all her assignment briefs. Her ability to let go of good ideas that fell short of a worthwhile idea was as impressive as her unwavering support and kindness towards her classmates. If the phrase 'I got this' could take human form, it would be Alicia, who exudes confidence, determination, and compassion. I’m so very proud of her.”

“Not only is Alicia extremely talented and intelligent, she commits to achieving her personal best. Her career as an art director in advertising is off to a remarkable start,” said Distinguished Professor Robin Landa also taught Alicia.

Alicia Novoa, a Phi Theta Kappa member, summed it up, “All in all, these experiences would not have been possible without the unwavering support and mentorship from my professors at Kean University. After all, cougars climb higher!”
