Kean University

March 10, 2020 Update

Your safety is my top priority. Due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases nationwide and here in New Jersey, Kean University will begin remote education at all campuses on Monday, March 16 to minimize the density of people on campus and reduce the potential health risk to our community. Remote education is currently planned for March 16-30. The University will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with you further during this time.

There are no suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19  at any of Kean’s campuses in the United States or in Wenzhou, China. This decision is proactive and ensures the continuity of our students’ semester.

During this period of remote education, the University will adopt these procedures:

  • Students should not return to campus following Spring Break and those students who are staying in the residence halls this week should return home if they are able to do so.
  • Students will begin remote instruction on Monday, March 16. All students will be  contacted by their faculty members with assignments and other instructions by Monday, March 16.
  • Faculty will receive instructions from their college’s dean about developing appropriate materials for their classes. Additional details will be forthcoming shortly.
  • University services and facilities will remain open and operating, and staff should continue to report to campus as usual.
  • The University currently plans to resume on-campus instruction on Monday, March 30 and will continue to update the campus community on this evolving situation.
  • No University-sponsored travel will be approved during this time.
  • Kean Online courses will continue as normal.
  • On-campus events should be rescheduled wherever possible. No campus event should occur during this time period without prior approval from the relevant Vice President.

The entire Kean community is reminded that the best way to avoid getting sick is to:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60-95 percent alcohol

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Wash your hands after using any communal touch screens.
  • Cover your nose/mouth when sneezing or coughing. Dispose of tissues immediately.
  • Avoid contact with sick people
.
  • If you have not received your flu vaccine, it is not too late although supplies may be limited.

Most importantly, if you are sick, have a fever, and/or experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness, stay home to reduce the risk of spreading the illness to others and call ahead before visiting any medical facilities. If you live on campus, contact your resident assistant for assistance.

If you have questions or concerns about your health, contact your healthcare provider or Student Health Services at (908) 737-4880.

For more information about coronavirus, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, the New Jersey Department of Health website or the Coronavirus Information page on Kean.edu.

The University continues to act thoughtfully and proactively in response to uncertainties posed by COVID-19. Let us continue to work together to ensure that our students receive a world-class education this semester regardless of the challenges.

Sincerely,

Dawood Farahi, Ph.D.

President
