Areas of Expertise

Xurong Kong received her first Master’s degree in Classical Chinese Literature from Beijing Normal University and her second Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Classical Chinese Literature from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kong has taught at Colombia University and San Diego State University, and received her tenure at Kean University in 2011. Currently Kong teaches Chinese Literature and World’s History in History Department. 

Kong frequently gives talks at universities and institutes in both China and America. She was on Fulbright Specialist Roster for 2018-2021. In the summer of 2019, Kong was assigned to Sichuan University under the Fulbright Specialist Fund. In the summer of 2022, Kong visited Japan for two months as the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Fellow.

Kong’s research focuses on early medieval Chinese poetry. She has published articles and books with Chinese and American top publishers and journals, such as Fu Poetry Along the Silk Roads (Arc Humanities, 2022), Selections from the History of the Later Han and Selections from Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government (China Book Company, 2018), “An Annotated Translation of Fuon Pomegranate in Yiwen leiju” (Journal of Early Medieval China, 2017), “Soundless Existence: Music in Classical Chinese Literature” (Yuefu xue, 2015), and “Origins of Verisimilitude: A Reconsideration of Medieval Chinese Literary Thought” (Journal of American Oriental Society, 2011).

孔旭榮, 北京師範大學古典文學碩士,美國威斯康星大學麥迪遜分校中國文學碩士和博士。目前任教於肯恩大學歷史系, 於2011年獲得終生教授資格。她有豐富的教學和管理經驗,創建並主持中文研究和亞洲研究多年,曾任教於聖地亞哥州立大學和哥倫比亞大學。曾應國內外二十多所高校和研究機構邀請發表學術講座,獲得富布萊特學者獎提名(Fulbright Core Scholar),榮任富布萊特專家庫學者(Fulbright Specialist Roster)和日本文化振興會研究員,並多次榮獲孔子學院研究基金。

主要研究領域包括中國中古文學與世界文化。主要著作有《辭賦文學中的絲綢之路》(Arc Humanities, 2022),《資治通鑒選譯》和《後漢書選譯》(中華書局,2018),《鬥雞與中國文化》(中華書局,2005)。 在國內外核心期刊發表多篇學術論文, 代表作有《形似的起源:中國中古文學思想再思考》(《美國東方學會會刊》2011年第131卷第2期), 《藝文類聚中的石榴賦》(美國《中國中古研究》 2017年第23期,《失聲的存在:中國古典文學中的音樂》(《樂府學》2015年第11期),《文學創作和絲綢之路》(《贵州铜仁学院学报—梵净国学栏目》2018 年第五期)。

With this teacher-guided and student-centered approach to teaching, and my academic specialization in classical Chinese literature and culture, I confidently offer a diverse range of courses. As Confucius said,“Teaching benefits students as well as teachers.” Through teaching, I believe that I have become a more holistic and fulfilled person.
