EEI – PLAINFIELD COMMUNITY LITERACY INITIATIVE

Kean University’s Division of Entrepreneurial Education Initiatives (EEI) is committed to increasing community literacy across New Jersey via the Community Literacy Initiative. The initiative strategically places literacy hubs filled with engaging and diverse literature for youth and families in various community spaces. EEI recently partnered with Hillside, NJ to provide high-quality culturally relevant books for children. Our soon to launch initiative with the Plainfield community will also include QR codes that encourage children and parents to engage with the texts along with access to research-based literacy tips. The Community Literacy Initiative aims to increase community literacy and promote a new love for reading!

Hillside

The Division of Entrepreneurial Education Initiatives started with a strategic collaboration with the city of Hillside to offer literacy hubs across the city. In partnership with several community resources such as the Hillside Public School district, local barbershops, and the Recreation Departments, we were able to provide culturally relevant books to the community, allowing us to offer accessible and engaging ways of learning. We also collaborated with Superintendent Glover and Mayor Vertreese to share engaging “Read Aloud” videos for children and their families.

The Plainfield Community Literacy Initiative will offer several literacy hubs for youth and families across the city. Each hub will contain culturally relevant books with QR codes that encourage children and parents to engage with each book; each book will also contain research-based literacy tips. The Initiative ultimately aims to increase community literacy and promote a new love for reading!
