Kean University has extended its test-optional admissions process through the Spring and Fall 2021 semesters to support prospective students coping with disruptions to the SAT and ACT testing schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Students are dealing with significant challenges not only in their education but also in their lives and their family’s lives right now,” said Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “Kean is broadening its admissions criteria to support prospective students on their path toward a college degree in these unprecedented times.”

In lieu of using standardized tests, like the SAT and/or ACT, the University will be placing greater emphasis on a student's high school GPA for admissions.

“At Kean, high school GPA is a better indicator of whether you’ll be successful in obtaining your goal of a four-year degree,” said Marsha McCarthy, vice president for enrollment services. “By extending test-optional admissions at Kean, we are looking more closely at prospective students’ GPA, and reducing the stress in the event that COVID impacts their ability to take standardized tests in their community.”

Kean offers virtual Open House events for prospective undergraduate and graduate students, virtual information sessions and a virtual campus tour

The University also has a wide range of need-based scholarships, including the Centennial Fund and Garden State Equity Scholarships, for talented students with a family income under $75,000. Additionally, financial aid staff work closely with students who are coping with the economic impact of the pandemic.

Kean continues to offer merit scholarships, including a $1,000 test-optional merit scholarship for students who have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students are still able to submit standardized test scores for additional scholarship consideration.

“Our message to students is — don’t delay your plans for college because you think it is financially out of reach or due to the pandemic,” said Director of Admissions Carlos Nazario. “Kean has the lowest tuition and fees in the state as well as financial aid and scholarship support to make any student’s dream a reality.”
