How would you sum up your Study Abroad Experience?
Amazing! I had so many experiences that was different from when I usually go on vacation. I got to be immersed into the Chinese culture and enjoyed it more than I would if I was just visiting as a tourist.
How would you describe your study abroad social and cultural experience?
I would rate my experience 9/10. The difference in culture and what is considered normal everyday activities there was different and distinct for me. The difference in food was definitely unique. I was lucky to be there during the Moon Festival; it was a strange experience for me because businesses were closed and the city was empty for almost a week because everyone went home to their individual cities to celebrate.
What was unique about China compared to other places you have visited?
The culture of China was different from any Ive ever experienced. One culture shock for me was to see people walking around with umbrellas when it was cloudy.
How was the transition for you as a student from a predominantly English speaking country and a school where instructions are in English to a country where English is not the first language?
With the exception of the Chinese course I took instructions were in English in the classroom. Observing interactions between Chinese locals around me helped me to learn some basic terms to use in my daily interactions.
Academically how would you rate the classes you took compared to here in America and what were the Instructors like?
The level of the instructions and knowledge of the instructors were comparable to Kean, with the exception of one lecture whose requests were more extensive than I was accustomed to.
What Advice would you give to students who are considering studying abroad?
I would encourage students to study abroad because you do not know when you will get the opportunity to travel after you have completed your studies and entered the world of work. Get ingrained in the culture of the country you go to. Do not limit yourself to where you are staying while abroad; explore and meet new friends.
What is the one thing you have taken away from your study abroad experience that will last you a lifetime?
I can do anything that I want to do. I should not put limits on myself but always remember that if Im thinking about doing something, instead of being fearful, convince myself that I really can.
Where did you study abroad and what program did you use?
I studied abroad in China with The Education Abroad Network (TEAN). I was also the recipient of the Gilman scholarship to fund my studies abroad.
