The Department of Professional Security Studies focuses on a student–centered, scholar-practitioner approach to education. Its mission is to facilitate access, create opportunities and provide a supportive environment for achieving academic success through learning and appreciation of subject matter, professional and personal growth, and the development of identified and marketable global and disciplinary competencies. Degree programs are designed for practicing security professionals as well as students seeking careers in the field. Coursework is also offered online and in Edison, NJ.
The Professional Security Studies Department is one of the few university departments in the country to be designated as a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in both intelligence and cybersecurity. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence awarded the department the intelligence CAE designation due to our strong record of preparing students with the critical thinking, analytic, research, and intercultural skills necessary for successful intelligence careers in both the public and private sectors.
The National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) awarded us the CAE designation in Cyber Defense thanks to our unique program that integrates cybersecurity with broader security policy, planning, and strategy - our students graduate with the unique ability to address technical and non-technical cyber challenges across the full range of human activity, from the tactical to the strategic.
Together, these dual CAE designations from some of the field's top organizations highlight the department's ability to effectively translate research and practitioner experience into courses that prepare our undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students to become leading contributors in security across the national, cyber, law enforcement, corporate, technology, and international sectors.
