What Will You Learn as a National Security Studies Major?

You will build advanced knowledge in security strategy, policy, risk analysis and organizational leadership, learning how to: 

  • Analyze national security policies, procedures and operations  
  • Apply national, corporate and cyber security theories to real-world challenges  
  • Evaluate risks, threats and vulnerabilities in government, private-sector and nonprofit settings  
  • Assess organizational decision-making in complex security environments  
  • Collaborate across disciplines and leadership structures to support effective security planning and response  
  • Strengthen executive-level written and oral communication skills

Specializations

You will choose one of the specialization pathways to pursue that align with your professional interests and career goals: 

National Security 
Focus on the global dimensions of national security policy, procedures and operations through courses such as counterintelligence and contemporary counterterrorism.  

Corporate Security 
Study organizational continuity, emergency response and risk management, including critical incident command and response.  

Information Assurance/Cyber Security 
Develop expertise in information assurance and cybersecurity, including information security strategy, privacy and systems protection.  

Capstone Options 

You have the option to complete the degree through one of three culminating experiences: 

Thesis 
Complete 30 credits of coursework plus 6 credits of thesis supervision and produce a master’s thesis of publishable quality.  

Specialized Field Project 
Complete 30 credits of coursework plus 6 credits of project supervision through an applied culminating project.  

Final Comprehensive Examination 
Complete 36 credits of coursework and demonstrate mastery through a comprehensive exam.
